From £220, price fixed

Exact Audi price by model and year agreed on the phone before we set off.

Our Audi key replacement in Oxford service cuts and codes spare and lost keys for the A1, A3, A4, A5, A6, Q3 and Q5 at your car, from £220, with the exact price set by model and year before we travel. That covers flip keys, the push in slot keys used on many A4, A5 and Q5 models, and Audi Advanced Key keyless fobs.

Audi’s newest immobiliser systems are among the most locked down of any brand, so some recent cars do need the dealer. We look up your registration first and tell you straight. For other makes, start with our car key replacement page.

Which of the three Audi key styles do you have?

Audi keys look quite different depending on the model and year, and each type is a different job.

Flip key

The fold out blade key found on older A3, A4 and A6 models, the A1, the Q3 of the 2010s and the MQB based A3 from around 2012. It turns in a conventional ignition barrel.

Generally the simplest Audi key to replace

Slot key

A rectangular fob with no fixed blade that pushes into a slot on the dashboard. Used on many B8 era A4 and A5 models, the Q5 of roughly 2008 to 2016 and some A6 and Q7 models. A small emergency blade hides inside.

Coding is involved; often still done at the car

Advanced Key fob

Audi’s keyless entry and start. The fob stays in your pocket and you press a start button. Fitted as an option on many models and standard on some higher trims.

Depends heavily on the model year

Audi immobiliser generations and when the dealer is needed

Audi sits in the Volkswagen Group, but its larger models use their own electronic architecture, which is why an A4 can be harder than an A3 of the same year. The table is a broad guide and the cut off years vary by model, so treat it as a starting point.

Typical modelsApproximate eraUsual outcome with a mobile locksmith
A3 8P, A4 B6 and B7, A6 C5, TT Mk1 and Mk2Early 2000s to around 2012Spares and lost keys normally done on site
A1, A3 8V, Q2, Q3 Mk1, TT Mk3Around 2010 to 2020 (PQ and MQB based)Most spares and many lost key jobs on site
A4 B8, A5 Mk1, Q5 Mk1, A6 C7Around 2008 to 2016Spares usually possible; all keys lost can mean removing a module for coding, which takes longer
A4 B9, A5 Mk2, Q5 Mk2, A6 C8, Q7 Mk2, e-tron and newerAround 2015 onwardsSome jobs, especially all keys lost, may only be possible through an Audi dealer

Equipment improves all the time, so a car that was dealer only last year may be possible now. That is exactly why we check by registration on every call rather than quoting from a list.

Why does an Audi key replacement start at £220?

Audi, like BMW, Mercedes and Lexus, sits in our premium pricing band. The key blanks themselves cost more, the coding often involves extra security steps, and on some models we need to read data from the car’s comfort or immobiliser module before a new key can be added. Each step takes time and specialist equipment.

From £220 is a starting point. Your exact price depends on the model, year, key type and whether you still hold a working key. We give you that figure on the phone, and it does not change when we arrive unless something unexpected turns up, in which case we stop and agree it with you first.

If you only need a key you already own coded to the car, programming an existing key costs less. Having a second key made while one still works is the most cost effective route, explained on our car key duplication page.

Audi key faults worth checking before you replace anything

A dead key is not always a lost cause. These are the Audi specific problems we see most.

  • Slot key goes in but nothing happens. On B8 era A4, A5 and Q5 cars, try a fresh fob battery first. If that fails, the ignition switch unit behind the slot can be the fault rather than the key.
  • Flip key buttons cracked through. Common on A3 and A4 flip keys. A new case with your board and chip transferred often fixes it.
  • Advanced Key not detected. A weak fob battery is the usual cause. Most Audis have a backup spot where you hold the fob to start; the handbook shows where.
  • Key works for locking but car will not start. Points to the immobiliser side, so the chip may need recoding.

Audi fobs mostly take a flat coin cell, and the correct size is printed on the old battery. Fit a branded cell, keep the contacts clean and check the small rubber seal sits flat afterwards, because moisture getting in is a common reason a board fails a few months after a battery change.

If the car is parked somewhere awkward, such as a shared basement car park in a city centre block, tell us when you call. Coding needs us to sit in the driver’s seat with the door open for a while, and knowing the access arrangements in advance saves time on the night.

Audis are a familiar sight on the drives of North Oxford, Headington and the villages around Woodstock and Thame, and plenty are on company leases. For leased cars, bring the lease agreement or a letter from the leasing company alongside your photo ID, because the V5C will not be in your name.

The A1, A3 and Q2 share a lot with VW and Skoda, which you can read about on our VW key replacement Oxford and Skoda key pages.

Audi dealer or mobile auto locksmith: a fair comparison

An Audi dealer can make a key for any Audi, including the newest models, using factory systems. Expect to order the key against your vehicle identification number, wait for it to arrive and bring the car in for coding, which needs recovery if every key is lost.

A mobile auto locksmith brings the work to the car and is often quicker for supported models. The trade off is that the newest models may be beyond what independent equipment can do. We would rather tell you that on the phone than charge you for a visit that cannot work.

If the key is locked inside, see our car lockout service first. For a child or vulnerable person inside a locked car, call 999 straight away.

Audi car keys Questions

Audi keys start from £220 with us, including cutting, coding and testing at the car. The exact price depends on the model, the year and the key type, and we confirm it on the phone before travelling.
On many models, yes, but some newer Audis with all keys lost can only be done by the dealer. We check your registration first and tell you which group your car is in.
Start with the fob battery. If a fresh battery does not help, the ignition switch unit behind the slot may be faulty rather than the key. We can test both before recommending a fix.
Usually, yes. With a working key, coding is simpler and quicker. When every key is lost, extra steps can be needed, so getting a spare early is the cheaper route.
Often. If the circuit board and chip are intact we move them into a new case and cut a matching blade, which keeps the coding and costs less than a new key.
The V5C will usually be in the leasing company’s name, so bring the lease agreement or a letter confirming you are the driver, plus your photo ID.
