As an auto locksmith in Oxford, we handle every lock and key fault on cars and vans at the place the vehicle has stopped: lockouts from £85, new keys from £90, and ignition barrel repairs from £155 plus parts. We work 24 hours, and inside the ring road we usually reach you within 10 to 30 minutes.

Keys are only part of the job. Drivers also call us about ignitions that will not turn, blades snapped inside a door lock, worn fob buttons and tailgates that refuse to open. If you specifically need a new or replacement key, our car key replacement hub covers that in depth.

What a mobile car locksmith fixes besides keys

Ignition faults

Key will not turn, turns but sticks, or spins without starting. We strip and repair the barrel, or fit a replacement coded to your existing key where possible.

Broken key extraction

A blade snapped in the door, boot or ignition is drawn out with extraction tools, then a new key is cut from the broken halves.

Fob shells and buttons

Cracked case, worn rubber buttons or a loose blade. The circuit board is moved into a new shell and the blade recut, so no reprogramming is needed in most cases.

Door and boot locks

Stiff, frozen or damaged door barrels, including after an attempted theft. We repair or replace the lock and code it to your key.

Lockouts and coding sit alongside these. See getting into a locked car and programming chips and remotes for those specific jobs.

Ignition will not turn? Common causes and fixes

An ignition fault often looks like a key problem, so it helps to work out which one you have before calling anyone. Here is what we usually find.

SymptomLikely causeWhat we doPrice
Key goes in but will not turnSteering lock under tension, or worn wafers in the barrelRelease the lock, then repair the barrel if worn£155 to £245 + parts

Try this before you call

If the key will not turn, gently move the steering wheel left and right while turning the key. When the steering lock is loaded against the barrel, easing the wheel often frees it. Never force the key with pliers, as that is how blades snap.

Auto locksmith for vans and small fleets

Trades vans are often run on a single key, which makes a lost key a lost day of work. We make spare keys for vans such as the Ford Transit and Transit Custom, Vauxhall Vivaro, Mercedes Sprinter, Peugeot Partner and Citroen Berlingo, and we open vans where the keys are locked in with tools inside.

Sliding side doors and rear barn doors have their own locks, which wear quickly with heavy use. We repair or replace those barrels and match them to the existing key so drivers keep one key for everything. For businesses we include the vehicle registration and the work done on each itemised invoice, which keeps fleet records straightforward. Van owners on the Kassam and Cowley side are covered by our Cowley and OX4 service.

Where our auto locksmith comes out to in Oxford

Cars break down and lock themselves in awkward places. We regularly work in:

Pear Tree Park and RideRedbridge Park and RideThornhill Park and RideSeacourt Park and RideOxford ParkwayWestgate car parkHospital car parks in HeadingtonRetail park car parksStation car parksA34 and A40 lay-bys

Park and Ride sites are a common call. You come back on the last bus, the key is not in your pocket and the car is on the far side of a large car park. Tell us the bay row or the nearest lamp post number and we find you quickly. In multi storey car parks, tell us the level; we park nearby and walk in with the tools.

For roadside jobs on the A34 or the ring road, wait somewhere safe behind the barrier, not in the car, and call us from there. Drivers in Headington can see our Headington OX3 page for local details.

Mobile car locksmith in towns around Oxford

Our base is at 169 Woodstock Road, close to the A40 and A34 junctions, which helps with jobs out of town. Places between 5 and 15 miles away, such as Kidlington and Yarnton, Thame and Bicester, are usually reached in 20 to 45 minutes with £10 travel. From 15 to 25 miles the usual time is 35 to 60 minutes with £20 travel.

We quote the arrival time honestly on the phone. If a job across the county means we are running late, we call to tell you.

Auto locksmith or breakdown service: who to call?

Breakdown services are good at batteries, tyres and towing. Lock and key faults are a specialist job, and the usual outcome is a tow to a garage or dealer. An auto locksmith carries blanks, cutting machines, extraction tools and coding equipment in the van, so the repair happens where the car stands.

  • Call breakdown cover for flat batteries, fuel, mechanical failure and accidents.
  • Call an auto locksmith for lockouts, lost or broken keys, ignition barrels, stuck door locks and fobs.
  • Call 999 if a child, vulnerable adult or animal is trapped in a hot car, before calling anyone else.

Some breakdown policies do include lockouts, so it is worth checking. If the wait is long, you can compare it against our arrival time and price, listed on our Oxford locksmith prices page.

Ownership checks on every vehicle job

Your car, your paperwork

We are DBS checked and insured to £1 million. Before we open a vehicle, cut a key or change an ignition, we see the V5C or a lease or hire agreement, plus photo ID. If the documents are inside the locked car, we check them the moment the door is open and before anything else happens.

Those checks protect you as much as us. A locksmith who skips them would do the same for a thief. Read more about how we work.
