Our emergency boarding up service in Oxford secures homes, flats and shops after a break-in, attempted burglary or accidental breakage, 24 hours a day. Make-safe work costs £89 to £189 plus materials, the price is agreed on the phone, and in the city (OX1 to OX4) we usually arrive within 10 to 30 minutes, traffic dependent.

The goal of the first visit is simple: by the time we leave, every damaged door and window is closed, fixed and lockable, and nobody can walk in. The tidy permanent repair comes afterwards, once your insurer has seen the damage.

The first hour after a break-in: what to do before we arrive

Call the police first

If the intruder may still be inside, or anyone is hurt or in danger, leave the property and dial 999. For a burglary that has already happened, report it to Thames Valley Police on 101 or online. You will need the crime reference number for any insurance claim.

  1. Do not tidy up yet. Officers or a forensic team may want to see the scene as it was found, so ask them before moving anything.
  2. Take your own photos. Wide shots of each room, then close ups of the forced lock, the split frame, the broken glass and any tool marks.
  3. Ring us once the police are happy. Tell us which doors or windows are damaged and roughly how big the openings are, so we load the right size boarding.
  4. Keep everyone away from glass. Shut pets in another room and leave large shards where they are for us to remove safely.

If the police have not yet attended and you cannot stay in the house, we can still secure it. We simply photograph everything first and leave the evidence undisturbed where possible.

What our emergency boarding up service covers

Boarding is only part of making a property safe. Depending on what was attacked, the night visit can include any combination of the following.

Broken glass

Shards removed from the frame, then timber sheet screwed over the opening. Typical for back door glazing, side panels and ground floor sash or casement windows.

Forced doors

A split timber frame or ripped keep is strengthened so the door closes and locks again. Where the frame is too badly damaged, the door is secured from the inside and the outside boarded.

Snapped or wrecked locks

A temporary cylinder, nightlatch or deadlock is fitted so you have working keys tonight, even if the final lock will be different.

Shops and offices

Shopfront doors, rear fire doors and storeroom doors secured so the business can trade or stay closed safely until the permanent fix.

Large commercial shopfront glazing needs a specialist glazier for replacement. We secure the opening and can point you towards one. For the frame and door side of the follow up job on business premises, see our commercial door repair service.

Make safe tonight, permanent repair later

Most break-in jobs happen in two stages. Splitting it this way keeps the first bill down, gives your insurer time to approve the work, and avoids buying the wrong door or lock in a rush at 2am.

When the cylinder was snapped, the long term answer is a rated one. Our anti snap lock upgrade page explains the ratings, and the multipoint lock replacement page covers a damaged uPVC gearbox.

Burglary repair and your home insurance claim

Most home and contents policies cover damage caused by forced entry, though the excess and conditions vary. Insurers usually expect you to take reasonable steps to secure the property straight away, which is exactly what emergency boarding is for. Check your policy or call its claims line before the permanent work if you can.

What you receive from us

Photographs of the damage taken before we touch anything, and an itemised invoice listing each task, each material and the time of the visit. Give us your crime reference number and we add it to the invoice, which saves a back and forth with the claims handler.

We are DBS checked and insured to £1 million public liability. If your insurer has its own approved contractor for the permanent repair, that is fine: our make-safe invoice stands on its own as an emergency cost.

Did they take keys? Securing the house properly afterwards

Burglars often pick up spare keys left in kitchen drawers, coat pockets or on hooks. If any keys are missing, assume they could be used and change every lock they fit, not only the one that was damaged. Our door lock change service handles this on the same visit when we carry the right cylinders.

If the cars on your drive are keyless or the car keys were taken, tell the police and your insurer, and keep the vehicle out of reach until the keys are dealt with.

Once the dust settles, it is worth looking at the whole house rather than the one door that failed:

  • Ground floor windows without key-locking handles, see window lock replacement.
  • Back doors facing alleyways or gardens, which are less visible from the street.
  • Timber front doors with only a nightlatch and no BS3621 deadlock.
  • Sheds and garages that store ladders or tools.

Our home security checklist for Oxford houses walks through each of these room by room.

Boarding up after accidents, storms and lost keys

Not every board-up follows a crime. We also secure property after:

  • A football, ladder or wheelie bin through a door panel or window.
  • The police or fire service forcing entry to reach someone inside.
  • Storm damage to an old timber back door or garage side door.
  • A landlord recovering a property where the tenant has left doors damaged.

If the problem is simply that you cannot get in, with no damage at all, you need our lockout service instead, which opens doors without force. And for planned work on a door that has dropped, warped or worn out over time, see door repair in Oxford.

Every job we take on is listed under our locksmith services, and the full price list is on the pricing page.

Emergency Boarding Up Oxford Break In Repairs Questions

Making a property safe after a break-in costs £89 to £189 plus materials, depending on how many openings need boarding and whether the frame needs reinforcing. Any new lock is listed separately, and night supplements on home jobs are included in the price we agree on the phone.
The police. Dial 999 if the burglar may still be there or anyone is in danger, otherwise report it on 101 or online. Get a crime reference number, then call us to secure the property. We can still attend before officers arrive if needed.
Many policies cover emergency make-safe costs after forced entry, subject to your excess and terms. Check your own policy. We give you photos of the damage and an itemised invoice with your crime reference number, which is what claims handlers normally ask for.
Yes. We carry timber sheet and fixings and board broken windows and glazed door panels 24 hours a day. The glass itself is replaced later by a glazier, while we deal with any window handles or window locks that were damaged.
A single broken door panel or window is usually secured in under an hour once we are there. A forced door with a split frame and a ruined lock takes longer, typically one to two hours, because the frame has to be strengthened before a temporary lock goes in.
Yes. Any lock those keys open should be changed or rekeyed, even if it was not damaged. We can do this on the same visit as the boarding when we have suitable cylinders in the van, or come back the next day.
