PATS chips coded on site
Your new Ford key is matched to the PATS immobiliser at the car, not ordered in.
Transit keys for trades
Transit, Transit Custom and Connect keys so the van is back on the road the same day.
KeyFree fobs supported
Push button start fobs for Kuga, Puma, Focus and Fiesta on most model years.
Lost keys wiped from the car
On an all keys lost job the missing Ford keys are deleted so they no longer start it.
Ford key replacement in Oxford is done at your car: we cut the blade, code the chip to Ford’s PATS immobiliser and test it on your drive, at work or at the roadside, usually the same day. A spare Ford key copied from a working one starts from £90, a flip remote from £120, a KeyFree smart fob from £160 and all keys lost from £170.
We cover Fiesta, Focus, Kuga, Puma, EcoSport, Mondeo, S-Max and the whole Transit range across Oxford and Oxfordshire, 24 hours a day. Send your registration and we check the exact key your Ford takes before we leave our base in North Oxford. For other makes, start at our car key replacement hub.
Which Ford key fits your car? A quick guide by era
Ford has changed its key design several times since the late 1990s, and the era of your car decides the blank we bring, how long coding takes and the price. Most Fords on Oxfordshire driveways fall into one of these groups.
| Era and typical models | Key you probably have | What we do |
|---|---|---|
| Late 1990s to mid 2000s: Fiesta Mk5, Focus Mk1, Mondeo Mk3, Ka (first generation), older Transit | Plain key with a chip in the head, or a separate remote fob. Some older models use the round Tibbe style blade. | Cut the blade, code the chip to PATS |
| Around 2005 to 2018: Fiesta Mk6 and Mk7, Focus Mk2 and Mk3, C-Max, Kuga Mk1 and Mk2, Transit Mk7 and Mk8 | Ford flip key with three buttons and a fold out blade | Cut, code the chip and pair the remote buttons |
| Around 2016 onwards on higher trims: Kuga, Focus Mk4, Fiesta Mk7.5 and Mk8, Puma, Mondeo Mk5 | KeyFree smart fob with a hidden emergency blade | Code the fob for keyless entry and push button start |
| Transit Custom, Transit Connect, Transit Courier, Ranger | Flip key or keyless fob depending on year and trim | Same day van key, extra keys for drivers |
Years overlap and trim levels vary, so these are a guide rather than a rule. A photo of your key on WhatsApp, or simply the registration, settles it in a minute.
How the Ford PATS immobiliser decides whether your car starts
PATS stands for Passive Anti-Theft System. Inside the head of every Ford key since the late 1990s is a small transponder chip with no battery. When you turn the key or press start, a coil around the ignition barrel or under the dashboard reads that chip, and the engine computer only lets the car run if the code is on its list of approved keys.
That is why a cheap copied blade will open the door and turn the ignition but the engine cuts out after a second or two. It also explains the classic Ford symptom of a flashing red key light or a key not recognised message on the dash: the chip is not being read, often because it has cracked or worked loose inside an old key.
When we make a Ford key, we add its chip to that approved list with diagnostic equipment plugged into the OBD port under the dash. If keys have been lost, we can clear the list and add back only the keys you still have, so a lost key found in a Cowley car park cannot start your car. You can read more on the process on our car key programming in Oxford page.
Ford KeyFree smart keys on the Kuga, Puma and newer Focus
KeyFree is Ford’s name for keyless entry with push button start. The fob stays in your pocket, the car senses it when you touch the door handle, and the start button only works when the fob is inside the cabin. Newer Kugas, Pumas, Focus Mk4 and the later Fiesta are the Fords we see with it most often around Oxford.
Each KeyFree fob contains a removable steel blade for the driver’s door, and on most models there is a backup spot in the cabin where you hold the fob if its battery is flat. Your owner’s manual shows where it is on your car. It is worth knowing before the battery dies on a cold morning at the Pear Tree park and ride.
Programming a KeyFree fob takes longer than a flip key, and the price starts from £160. Many recent Ford smart fobs also sleep when they have not moved for a while, which helps against relay theft. If you want to understand the wider picture, our smart and keyless key replacement page explains how proximity keys work across different makes.
Transit van keys when the job cannot wait
Self employed and stuck?
If your Transit is your workshop, a lost key costs you a day of earnings as well as the key. Call with the registration first thing and we will give you a price and an honest arrival time so you can plan the rest of the day.
The Transit, Transit Custom and Transit Connect make up a large share of the vans on Oxfordshire roads, from builders around Bicester to delivery drivers on the ring road. We cut and code van keys on site and can add extra keys so each driver on a small fleet has their own, which is cheaper than replacing one shared key every time it goes missing. Mixed fleets with Sprinters or Vivaros alongside the Transits are covered on our van key replacement page.
Transits are a common target for thieves, so we also look at the condition of the door locks while we are with you. Load door locks that feel rough or loose are worth having checked, because a damaged barrel can stop a new key turning even when the chip is correct.
Common Ford key faults and what each one usually means
| What you notice | Likely cause | Usual fix |
|---|---|---|
| Flip blade will not stay out or flops sideways | Worn hinge pin, very common on Focus and Fiesta flip keys | New case with your existing chip and board moved across |
| Buttons need a hard press or work only close up | Flat coin battery or worn button contacts | Battery first, then a case or board repair |
| Engine starts then stalls, key light flashes | Chip not read or not on the approved list | Reprogram or replace the transponder |
| Key turns stiffly or will not turn in the ignition | Worn blade or a tired ignition barrel | Fresh blade cut to code, or ignition repair |
| KeyFree fob says no key detected | Weak fob battery or fob lost its pairing | Battery, then recode if needed |
Ignition barrel repair starts from £155 to £245 plus parts, and we always try the cheaper fix first. A flat fob battery is the cause more often than people expect, so swap it before you book anything.
Ford dealer or mobile locksmith for a replacement Ford key?
Both routes produce a working key. A Ford dealer will usually need the car on site, may need to order the key in, and works during opening hours. A mobile auto locksmith brings the blanks and coding kit to wherever the car is, which matters most when every key is lost and the car cannot be driven anywhere.
The honest exceptions: a few of the very newest Fords, or unusual specifications, may only be supported by the dealer for a period after launch. We check that from your registration before we travel, so you do not pay for a wasted visit. If you own a Stellantis era van or car as well, see our Vauxhall key replacement page, and for a Volkswagen in the household our VW key replacement page covers that group.
One cost saving owners often miss: on many older Fords, if you already have two working coded keys, you can add a third yourself by following the routine in the owner’s manual. With only one key, it has to be done with diagnostic equipment. Having a spare cut while you still have a working key is always cheaper, which is what our spare car key duplication service is for.
What to have ready for your Ford key appointment
- Registration and location. Tell us where the Ford is parked, including car park level or the bay number if you know it.
- Proof it is yours. The V5C logbook in your name, or a hire or finance agreement, plus photo ID. We do not cut a Ford key without both.
- Any keys you still have. Even a broken flip key helps, because the board or chip can sometimes be reused.
- Access to the cabin. If the key is locked inside, we open the car first through our keys locked in car service and then sort the key.
For a child or vulnerable person locked inside a car, call 999 before you call us. For everything else, our full list of car prices sits on the locksmith prices page.
