Green key light decoded
We explain what the flashing Honda immobiliser light is telling you.
Remote head keys
The all in one key and remote fitted to most 2000s Jazz and Civic cars.
Honda smart keys
Keyless fobs for CR-V, HR-V, later Civic and Jazz e:HEV hybrids.
Spare keys from £90
Copied from your working Honda key and paired to the car.
Our Honda key replacement in Oxford covers spare keys from £90, remote and flip keys from £120, smart keys from £160 and all keys lost from £170 for the Jazz, Civic, CR-V and HR-V, made at the car, usually the same day. Honda keys are reliable, but the remote head keys on older cars wear out their buttons and blades, and many second hand Hondas are sold with only one key. We confirm your model and key type from the registration, agree the price, then come to you anywhere in Oxford and Oxfordshire. See our car key replacement in Oxford page for other makes.
What the green key light on a Honda dashboard means
Most Hondas have a small green key symbol on the instrument panel. It belongs to the immobiliser, which Honda calls its ignition security system. When you turn the key, the light should come on briefly and go out. That means the car has read the chip in the key and accepted it.
If the green key light flashes and the engine turns over but will not fire, or will not crank at all, the car has not recognised the key. Common reasons are a cracked key head that has let the chip shift, a chip damaged by a drop or a wash, or a copied key that was cut but never programmed. Trying a spare key, if you have one, tells you quickly whether the car or the key is at fault.
Flashing light with your only key?
Do not keep cranking, as it drains the battery. Call 07520 644 595 with the registration. A new key programmed to the car usually solves it, and we bring the equipment to check the immobiliser at the same time.
The three kinds of Honda key, side by side
Remote head key
A fixed metal blade with the lock and unlock buttons built into a chunky plastic head. Fitted to most Jazz, Civic and CR-V models through the 2000s and into the early 2010s, depending on year.
Spare or replacement from £120. Button pads and blades wear first.
Flip key
The blade folds into the remote at the press of a button. Found on many Hondas from the 2010s, including Civic and CR-V, depending on trim.
From £120. The hinge pin is the weak point.
Smart key
No blade to turn. The car senses the fob and you press a start button. Common on later CR-V, HR-V, Civic and the Jazz e:HEV hybrid.
From £160. Emergency blade hidden inside.
Very early Jazz and Civic cars used a plain chipped key with a separate remote fob. Those are the cheapest to copy, and mechanical door key cutting with no chip starts at £35 to £55.
Honda Jazz, Civic, CR-V and HR-V keys in Oxford
Honda Jazz
The Jazz is the Honda we make most keys for. It is a favourite small car in Oxford, easy to park in tight streets in Jericho and Headington, and many have passed through two or three owners. Older Jazz keys are remote head keys. The fourth generation from 2020 is a hybrid with a smart key on many versions.
Honda Civic
Civics from around 2006 to 2021 were built at Honda’s former plant in Swindon, so there are plenty on Oxfordshire roads. Key types vary more on the Civic than any other Honda, from remote head keys to flip keys and smart keys, so the registration check matters here.
Honda CR-V
Popular in the villages and with dog owners who need a big boot. Older CR-Vs use remote head keys. Later ones moved to flip keys and smart keys depending on trim level.
Honda HR-V and others
The HR-V from 2015 typically has a smart key or flip key. We also see the Accord, FR-V and Insight. Very recent Hondas are checked by registration in case dealer supply is needed.
Worn, cracked or temperamental Honda keys
Honda owners tend to keep their cars a long time, so a lot of our Honda work is on keys that have simply worn out rather than been lost.
Buttons that need a hard press. The rubber pad under the buttons on remote head keys wears through. A fresh battery is the first step. If that does not help, a new shell or a new remote key is the fix.
Blade catching in the ignition. Many Honda keys from the mid 2000s onward use an internal track blade. After years of use the edges round off and the key starts to stick. We cut a new blade by decoding the lock rather than copying the worn key, so the new one is crisp.
Key head split around the blade. If the plastic head cracks, the chip can move and the green light starts flashing. Do not glue it. A replacement key keeps the chip secure.
Where only the remote needs recoding, our programming service for car keys and fobs costs less than a new key.
Honda key replacement in Oxford from first call to finished key
- You send the registration, model and location to 07520 644 595. A photo of any remaining key helps.
- We confirm the key type and give a fixed price. Travel is free within 5 miles of central Oxford, £10 up to 15 miles and £20 up to 25 miles.
- On arrival we see the V5C logbook and photo ID. Without them we do not make the key.
- The blade is cut to your locks and the chip is programmed to the immobiliser through the diagnostic port.
- Lost keys are removed from the car where the system allows. We then test the green key light, starting, locking and the boot.
A spare Honda key is usually finished in under an hour once we are at the car. If you are locked out with the key inside rather than without one, see our car lockout service instead.
Is a Honda dealer or a locksmith better for a new key?
A Honda dealer can order a key for any model and is the natural choice under warranty. You usually need to take the car there, and if no key works that can mean recovery. A mobile auto locksmith comes to the car and can usually do the job in one visit, but a few of the newest models may still need the dealer, which we will tell you before you book.
Fellow Japanese makes work in a similar way. If you have a second car in the family, our Toyota keys page and Mazda key replacement page may help, and every price we charge is on the Oxford locksmith price list.
