We confirm what your Jaguar needs before we set off, every time.

Jaguar key replacement in Oxford means a new smart key or blade key cut and coded at your car for the XE, XF, XJ, F-Pace, E-Pace, F-Type and older X-Type and S-Type, tested before we leave and usually done the same day. Every Jaguar key is priced by model and year from your registration, and we agree that price on the phone before travelling.

Jaguars from the Ford years and the later JLR years use very different systems, so the first question is always which one you have. For other makes, see our car key replacement Oxford page.

Ford era or JLR era: why your Jaguar's age matters

Jaguar was owned by Ford from 1989 until 2008, then joined Land Rover under Tata ownership as JLR. That history shows up in the keys.

The X-Type, built on Mondeo underpinnings, and the S-Type use Ford style transponder keys: a cut blade with a chip and remote buttons in the head. These are usually the most straightforward Jaguar keys to replace, even when every key is lost.

The XF from 2008 brought keyless start with a smart fob, and every Jaguar since has used a proximity key that stays in your pocket. Newer models share large parts of their security electronics with Land Rover, so the methods are closely related to our Land Rover and Range Rover keys work.

Jaguar key replacement model by model

ModelRoughlyKey type
X-Type2001 to 2009Flip or fixed blade remote key, Ford style chip
S-Type1999 to 2008Blade key with remote head
XJ and XK2000s onwardsBlade remotes on earlier cars, smart keys on later ones, depending on year
XF2008 onwardsSmart key with push button start; the second generation from 2015 uses a newer fob
XE2015 onwardsSmart key, keyless entry on many trims
F-Type2013 onwardsSmart key with hidden emergency blade
F-Pace, E-Pace, I-Pace2016 onwardsSmart key; some offered the waterproof Activity Key wristband

Facelifts and model year changes can alter the fob, so the registration tells us more than the model name.

How a Jaguar smart key talks to the car

Your Jaguar fob carries a coded identity and a small radio transmitter. When you press the Start button, the car sends out a low power signal inside the cabin and waits for the fob to answer. If the answer matches one of the keys the car has stored, the engine starts. Lock and open work on a separate signal from the buttons or from the door handle sensors.

When we make a key we add a new identity to that stored list, cut the emergency blade so you can still open the driver’s door if the fob dies, and remove any key you have lost. Coding a fob you already own is our car key programming service.

Jaguar key fob problems we are often called about

Key not detected on an XF

Usually a weak coin cell. Your handbook shows a backup position where the car can read the fob directly, so you can still drive home.

Buttons work but the car will not start

The remote and the start function are separate, so this can point to lost coding or a fault inside the fob. We test before suggesting a new key.

X-Type blade snapped or loose

The flip mechanism on older fobs wears out. A new blade or shell is often enough.

Boot or keyless entry stopped working

Check the fob battery first, then the door handle sensors. Not every fault is the key.

For shell swaps and button repairs, see our car key repair page.

Keeping a keyless Jaguar on your drive

Keyless Jaguars can be targeted in the same way as other proximity key cars, with thieves relaying the fob’s signal from inside a house. Simple habits help: keep keys away from the front of the house, use a metal tin or a tested signal blocking pouch overnight, and fit a steering wheel lock if the car lives on the street. Ask your Jaguar retailer whether any security updates apply to your car.

If a spare fob has disappeared, have it deleted from the car. That stops it working even if someone finds it.

Lost every Jaguar key? Your realistic options

The honest version

Ford era X-Type and S-Type keys can almost always be made at the car. Many smart key XF, XE and F-Pace models can too. Some of the newest Jaguars, especially with all keys lost, need the dealer’s own online systems. We check by registration before travelling, so you are never charged to discover that.

A Jaguar retailer can supply every key and has full factory access, though keys are often ordered and the car may need to be recovered to them. We come to the car, agree the price first and finish most supported jobs in one visit. If you only have one key now, a spare car key is the cheaper insurance against an all keys lost call later.

When the problem is the car battery, not the Jaguar key

A Jaguar that has stood for a few weeks, perhaps at Oxford Parkway or outside a college over the vacation, can drain its 12 volt battery. When that happens, the fob buttons seem dead and keyless entry does nothing, so it looks exactly like a key fault.

Before paying for a new key, try the emergency blade hidden inside the fob. On many models the driver’s door lock sits behind a small cover on the handle, and your handbook shows how to reach it. If the doors open but the dashboard stays dark, the car needs a charge or a new battery, not a new key.

After a battery change, some Jaguars show security or key warnings until the car has been locked and opened a few times or driven a short distance. If a warning stays, ring us and we will talk it through before suggesting any work.

Jaguar Key Replacement Oxford Questions

It depends on the model, year and whether you still have a working key. An X-Type blade key and an F-Pace smart key are very different jobs. Send the registration and we fix the price before we travel.
Only if it is a new, unused fob of the correct part for your car. Used Jaguar fobs are often locked to their original car. Send us a photo of the listing before you buy.
Usually, yes. Hold the fob at the backup position shown in the handbook and press Start. If the car starts, replace the fob battery. If it does not, the key may need recoding.
Yes. The X-Type uses a Ford style chip key, so spares and lost keys are usually made at the car in one visit, including the flip blade and remote buttons.
On many F-Pace model years, yes. Some newer cars with every key lost need Jaguar’s own systems. We check your registration and tell you before setting off.
Newer models share much of their electronics as both are JLR brands, but the fobs, parts and coding are specific to each vehicle. A key from one will not work on another.
