Honest on dealer jobs

If your model needs Land Rover's own systems, you hear it before we travel.

Land Rover key replacement in Oxford covers spare and lost smart keys for the Range Rover, Range Rover Sport, Evoque, Velar, Discovery, Discovery Sport, Freelander and Defender, cut and coded at the vehicle and tested before we leave, usually the same day. Because Land Rover keys vary so much by model and year, we price each one from your registration and confirm it on the phone before we set off.

Some of the newest Land Rovers are dealer only for keys, and we say so up front. For other makes, start with our car key replacement in Oxford page.

Blade keys with remote

Older Freelanders, the Discovery 2 and the original Defender use a key that turns in an ignition barrel. The chip and remote are in the head.

First smart keys

From the mid 2000s many models moved to a fob with push button start, including the Discovery 4, Freelander 2 and Range Rover Sport, depending on year and trim.

Keyless entry fobs

Evoque, Velar, Discovery Sport and the Range Rover and Sport from the 2010s use a pocket fob with a hidden emergency blade and full keyless entry on most trims.

Latest fobs and Activity Key

The current Defender, Discovery and newest Range Rovers use newer fobs, and some offer a waterproof wristband key or phone access. These are often dealer only for now.

Within one model name the key can change after a facelift, so we always confirm by registration rather than by the badge.

How the Land Rover key system works, in plain English

Land Rover and Jaguar have been under the same ownership since 2008, now trading together as JLR, and newer models from both share much of their security electronics. A modern Land Rover fob does two jobs. It sends a radio signal to lock and open the doors, and it carries an identity the vehicle checks before it allows the engine to start.

On keyless models, aerials around the cabin look for the fob when you touch a handle or press Start. If the fob battery is weak, the car may not see it. Most models have a backup spot, often on or near the steering column or in a console cubby, where you hold the fob so the car can read it directly. Your handbook shows where.

To make a new key we connect to the vehicle, add the new fob to its list of approved keys and remove any that are lost. On some models this needs the old keys present; on others it can be done with none. That is the main reason we ask for the registration first. Coding a fob you have already bought is covered by our car key programming in Oxford service.

Range Rover keyless theft: what actually helps

Range Rovers and Range Rover Sports have been among the most stolen vehicles in the UK, and keyless entry is a big part of why. In a relay attack, thieves pick up the signal from a fob inside your house and pass it to the vehicle, which then opens and starts as if the key were next to it. We will not explain the method in more detail, but we can help you make it much harder.

Steps that make a real difference

Keep fobs in a signal blocking pouch or metal box, and test it by trying the door handle with the fob inside. Store keys away from the front door and windows. Fit a visible steering wheel lock. Ask the dealer whether your vehicle has had the latest security updates. Consider an insurer approved tracker.

Many newer Land Rover fobs go to sleep after a short time without movement, and later systems were redesigned to resist relay attacks, though no system is perfect. If you think a spare key has gone missing, getting it deleted from the vehicle is the single most useful thing you can do.

Land Rover key faults and what usually causes them

Many of these are repairs rather than new keys. Our car key repair page covers shells, buttons and batteries.

Spare Range Rover key or all keys lost?

Ordering a second key while you still have one is the cheaper and simpler route on nearly every Land Rover. We work with the existing key present, add the new one, cut its emergency blade and test locking, the tailgate and keyless start. If you bought the vehicle with only one key, this is worth sorting soon. See our spare car key service for how the visit runs.

With every key lost, older blade key Land Rovers and many smart key models from the 2000s and 2010s can usually be done at the vehicle. The newest models, and some earlier ones depending on year, may need Land Rover’s own online systems. We check before travelling. If the key is locked inside, our keys locked in car service opens it without damage; a child or animal inside on a warm day is a 999 call first.

Land Rover dealer or mobile locksmith: a fair comparison

A Land Rover retailer has full factory access and can supply keys for every model, including the latest fobs and Activity Key. Keys are usually ordered against the chassis number, so there can be a wait, and with no working key the vehicle may need recovering to them.

We work at the vehicle, which suits a Discovery on a farm track or a Range Rover on a driveway in north Oxford, and we agree the price before setting off. For the models we support, that is often a single visit. For the models we do not, we tell you on the first call.

If you also run a Jaguar, our Jaguar key replacement page explains the shared JLR technology. Commercial Defenders and Land Rover based vehicles used for work are also covered by our van and commercial key service.

Before we arrive: documents and details

  1. Registration and model. On the phone, or send a photo of the key and the vehicle to WhatsApp 07466 695655.
  2. Proof you own or keep it. V5C logbook, or finance, lease or company paperwork.
  3. Photo ID matching that paperwork.
  4. Every key you still have, so lost ones can be removed and the rest kept working.

Prices include VAT and labour, and you get an itemised invoice, which helps with insurance claims for stolen keys.
