From £220

Price set by model and year and agreed on the phone first.

Our Lexus key replacement in Oxford makes spare and lost smart keys for most IS, CT200h, NX, RX and UX models at the car, usually the same day, from £220. Lexus is Toyota’s premium brand and shares much of its key technology, so the tools that work on a Corolla often work on an NX. The difference is that more Lexus models use keyless Smart Access as standard, and the newest generation of Lexus security can need extra work or a dealer. We check your registration before travelling and tell you honestly which group your car falls into. The wider Oxford car key replacement page lists every make we cover.

Is it the key, or is it the hybrid battery?

This is the most useful thing to know about a Lexus that seems to have rejected its key. Every Lexus hybrid has two batteries: the large drive battery and a small 12V auxiliary battery that powers the electronics. When the 12V battery is weak, the car can show a key not detected warning, ignore the start button and refuse to unlock, even though the key is fine.

Two checks that cost nothing

First, look at the interior lights and dashboard. If they are dim or dead, the 12V battery is the likely cause and a jump start or battery replacement is what you need, not a key. Second, if the dash wakes up but says no key, hold the fob, logo side first, against the start button while pressing the brake. Most Lexus models will read a key with a flat cell that way. If the car then shows READY, you need a new fob battery, not a new key.

If neither works, the key may be damaged or lost and that is where we come in. If you are locked out with the key inside, see keys locked in a car instead.

Lexus keys by generation

Lexus key design falls into three broad phases. The dates below are approximate and vary by model, which is why we confirm by registration.

Early IS, GS and RX (late 1990s to mid 2000s)

A metal key with an internal track cut, a transponder chip in the head and either a built in remote or a separate fob. These are usually straightforward to copy or replace on site, and are the cheapest Lexus keys to deal with.

Smart Access era (roughly 2005 to 2017)

The IS250 and IS220d, later GS and RX, CT200h and the first NX moved to Smart Access with push button start. The fob stays in your pocket, the car senses it at the door handle, and a slim emergency blade slides out of the fob for the driver’s door. Spare and lost keys on most of these are made on site.

Latest platforms (roughly 2018 onwards)

Newer UX, ES, later NX and RX models use a more recent security generation shared with the latest Toyotas. On many of these a spare can still be added, but an all keys lost job may need direct access to modules behind the dash, and a few may only be possible through Lexus. We tell you which before booking.

Some RX and LS models were offered with a slim card key as an extra. Those can be harder to source, so tell us if that is what you had.

Lexus models Oxfordshire drivers bring us

IS200 and IS300IS250 and IS220dIS300hCT200hNX300hRX400h and RX450hUX250hGS450hES300h

The CT200h is the Lexus we are asked about most often in and around Oxford. It is a popular second hand hybrid for commuters on the A34 and A40, and many changed hands with only one key. The NX and RX are common in the villages and on school runs, and the IS300h turns up as a quiet executive car parked at business sites such as Milton Park and Harwell.

Because Lexus and Toyota share so much, our Toyota key replacement page is useful background if you own both, which plenty of households do.

What a Lexus key replacement in Oxford involves

  1. Registration check

Send the registration by phone on 07520 644 595 or by WhatsApp to 07466 695655. We look up the key type and security generation and quote from £220, depending on model and year.

  2. Ownership check

At the car we see the V5C logbook and photo ID. If the car is a company or lease vehicle, we need written authority from the keeper.

  3. Key made and paired

A new smart key is paired with the car’s smart key computer. On all keys lost jobs this can take longer as the system has to be reset first.

  4. Everything tested

Keyless entry at each door, the boot sensor, push button start with the car showing READY, and the emergency blade in the driver’s lock.

Where the system allows it, keys that are not present are removed from the car’s memory so a lost Lexus key cannot be used to drive it away.

Common Lexus fob faults and what they cost to fix

SymptomLikely causeUsual fix
Keyless entry stopped, buttons still workWeak fob cell, or the car’s smart entry has been switched offNew coin cell, or turn smart entry back on as shown in your handbook
Key not detected on start, dash lights normalFob cell nearly flat or fob damagedHold fob to start button, then replace cell or key
Nothing at all, dim lights12V auxiliary battery flatJump start or new battery, no key work needed
Emergency blade will not turn the doorDriver’s lock seized from years of keyless useLubricate and free the lock while we are there
Fob dropped, casing splitPhysical damage to the boardNew smart key or reprogramming

The seized door lock is worth a mention. Lexus owners almost never use the blade, so after ten years the driver’s lock can be stiff exactly when the fob fails. If the remote side alone needs attention, see our key and fob programming service.

Lexus centre or mobile locksmith: a fair comparison

When the Lexus centre is the better call

If your Lexus is still under warranty, is one of the latest platforms where we cannot help, or you simply prefer a manufacturer key, the dealer is the right route. Expect the car to need to be there and the key to be ordered in.

A mobile auto locksmith makes most sense when the car cannot be driven because every key is gone, when the car is parked somewhere awkward, or when you want a second key without giving up the car for a day. For keyless fobs across other brands, see our proximity and smart key page, and if a Range Rover or Discovery shares the drive with your Lexus, our Land Rover key replacement page covers it. Travel inside 5 miles of central Oxford is free, and the full Oxford locksmith prices are published.

Lexus car keys Questions

Lexus keys from us start at £220 and the final figure depends on model, year and whether any working key remains. Lexus dealers price their own keys separately. We fix our price on the phone before travelling.
Most often the fob battery is low or the 12V auxiliary battery is weak. Hold the fob against the start button with your foot on the brake. If the car starts, replace the fob battery. If the dash is dim, check the 12V battery first.
On most CT200h years, yes. We reset the smart key system and pair new keys at the car, which takes longer than a spare. Have the V5C and photo ID ready.
The electronics are closely related and the same equipment programs both, but the fobs, blades and part numbers differ, so a Toyota key will not work a Lexus. See our Toyota keys page for that brand.
Often a spare can be added, but all keys lost on the latest platforms may need direct module access or the dealer. Send the registration and we will tell you which applies before you book.
Yes if you only have one. Adding a key while one works is simpler and cheaper than rebuilding the system after the last one is lost, and many used Lexus cars are sold with a single key.
