Dave Oxford Locksmith is the locksmith for Marcham and the other OX13 villages west and south of Abingdon, usually arriving within 20 to 40 minutes from North Oxford with daytime lockouts from £59 and travel usually £10. We cover Steventon, Kingston Bagpuize, Southmoor, Shippon, Fyfield, Frilford, Appleton, Longworth and Wootton, 24 hours a day.
OX13 is a rural postcode, so the work here is different from a town. There are more old timber doors, more outbuildings and gates, and more people who rely on a spare key hidden somewhere that has since gone missing. Abingdon town itself, along with Drayton and Sutton Courtenay, is covered on our separate Abingdon OX14 page.
Which Villages Make Up OX13?
The OX13 postcode wraps around the western side of Abingdon. It follows the A415 out through Marcham and Frilford, the A420 through Appleton, Fyfield and Kingston Bagpuize, and drops south to Steventon on the far side of the A34.
If you are not sure whether your hamlet is on the list, ring and tell us the nearest pub or church. We cover every village on this map and plenty around it, and the wider district is set out on our Vale of White Horse locksmith page.
Our Route Out to Marcham, Steventon and the A420 Villages
There is no single road into OX13, so the route depends on where you live. From our base at 169 Woodstock Road we choose one of three:
- A420 villages. For Appleton, Fyfield, Longworth, Hinton Waldrist and Kingston Bagpuize we go out through Botley and along the A420 past Cumnor. Kingston Bagpuize is usually around 25 to 35 minutes.
- A415 villages. For Marcham, Frilford, Garford and Shippon we take the A34 south and come off at the Marcham interchange. Marcham is often 20 to 30 minutes outside rush hour.
- Steventon. We stay on the A34 a little longer and come in from the Milton side. Morning traffic on the A34 can stretch this towards 40 minutes.
Lanes between the villages are narrow and unlit, so at night a precise postcode and the name of your house help us find you quickly. The time we give you on the phone is a real estimate for that hour, not a sales line.
Cottage Doors Versus Estate Doors in the OX13 Villages
Most villages here have an old core of stone and timber framed houses with newer streets built around them since the 1960s. The two halves need very different locks and different fixes.
Old cottage and farmhouse doors
Found along Steventon’s raised causeway, the stone lanes of Appleton and Longworth, the thatched cottages in Fyfield and the older parts of Marcham. Typically a thick ledged or panelled timber door with a rim nightlatch and a mortice, sometimes a rim lock with a big old key. Frames move with the seasons, so latches bind in wet winters.
Usual fix: ease and realign the latch, then fit a BS3621 5 lever mortice if the insurer asks for one.
Estate and new build doors
Found on the newer roads in Kingston Bagpuize, Southmoor, Marcham and Steventon. uPVC or composite doors with a multipoint lock and a euro cylinder. The common faults are a handle that will not lift, a door that has dropped, and builder grade cylinders that are not anti snap rated.
Usual fix: realign the door or swap the gearbox, then upgrade to a TS007 3 star anti snap cylinder.
Barns, Stables, Garden Gates and Garages
Village properties often come with more than one door. Converted barns, stable blocks, detached garages, workshops and long garden walls with timber gates are all common across OX13, and their locks get far less attention than the front door until a key is lost.
We fit and repair garden gate locks including keyed gate latches and bolts that work from both sides, swap tired handles on garage doors, and remove padlocks when the key has gone missing, once you show us the property is yours. Outbuildings are a frequent target for theft of tools and garden machinery, so a solid hasp and a closed shackle padlock are usually worth more than an alarm sticker.
The Calls a Marcham Locksmith Gets Most Often
Village work follows a pattern. These are the jobs that come up again and again across OX13:
- Lockouts on a latched door. A nightlatch on a cottage door locks itself the moment the door swings shut in a draught. Our lockout service opens most of these without harm to the door.
- New owners changing locks. Village houses change hands less often, so the keys from the previous owners, their cleaners and their builders can be decades old. A cylinder swap or a rekey of the existing locks cuts them all off.
- Stiff old mortices. Keys that need jiggling in a damp back door are usually a lock full of grit and old grease, which we clean and adjust before it seizes.
- Lost car keys on the drive. With buses thin on the ground, a lost key strands people. We cut and program most makes at the house through our car key replacement service.
Spare Keys, Carers and Getting In Without Damage
In a village it is common to leave a spare key with a neighbour, under a pot or in the porch. That works until the neighbour is away or the key disappears, and then you are locked out on a dark lane with no shop nearby.
If someone else needs access to your home
For elderly relatives, carers or holiday lets, a police approved key safe fitted to a solid wall beats a hidden key every time. We fit them alongside lock changes, and the code can be changed whenever a carer leaves.
When you are locked out, we open the door without damage in most cases. Before we start we ask for ID or a letter with your address, because a village house with nobody around is exactly where that check matters most. If someone vulnerable is inside, or a bath or cooker is running, ring 999 first and then call us. Our guide to avoiding another lockout has more ideas that suit country homes.
Towns and Postcodes Either Side of OX13
OX13 borders several of our other areas. Abingdon town, Drayton and Radley are on the Abingdon OX14 page. Further west along the A415 and A338 you reach Wantage and Grove in OX12, and past Kingston Bagpuize on the A420 the next stop is Faringdon and Buckland in SN7.
Our map of every area we cover shows the rest of the county, and the home locksmith services page explains each type of job in more depth.
