Our locksmith Carterton service covers the whole of OX18, from Shilton Park and the streets around RAF Brize Norton to Burford, Bampton and Alvescot, 24 hours a day. A daytime lockout costs £59 to £79, travel is usually £20, and we normally reach Carterton 35 to 50 minutes after you call from our North Oxford base.
We agree the full price on the phone, open most doors without any damage, and bring common euro cylinders and nightlatches in the van, so most lock changes are finished on the first visit. Other West Oxfordshire towns are listed on our areas we cover page.
Carterton, Brize Norton and the rest of OX18
OX18 is a wide postcode. It runs from the planned town of Carterton, which grew in the twentieth century next to the airfield, out to the old Cotswold market town of Burford and the villages along the Thames meadows towards Bampton.
Each part brings different doors. Carterton itself is mostly post war and modern housing, while Burford and Bampton are full of stone buildings, many of them listed. If you are towards Faringdon on the southern edge, our Faringdon SN7 locksmith page may cover you more closely.
Moving in near RAF Brize Norton: locks on arrival day
RAF Brize Norton is the largest station in the RAF, and the homes around Carterton see a steady turnover of service families, contractors and civilians who work on the base. That makes moving day our most common reason for driving out here.
Living in service family accommodation?
Homes managed for the MOD normally have their own maintenance helpdesk and rules on who may change the locks. Check with them before booking a lock change. If you are locked out and cannot wait, we can still get you in without damage, and you will get an itemised invoice to pass on.
For privately owned or rented homes, a new cylinder on the front and back door means only the keys you hold will work. Most Carterton houses take a standard euro cylinder, so a same day door lock change costs £65 to £85 per door plus a lock from £25, with three keys included. If the existing locks are in good order, a lock rekey can be cheaper.
What we fix on Carterton and Shilton Park doors
Shilton Park and newer estates
Composite front doors with multipoint locks and euro cylinders. The cylinders fitted by builders are often basic, so we suggest a TS007 3 star anti snap replacement.
Older Carterton semis and terraces
Replacement uPVC doors from the 1990s and 2000s. Worn gearboxes and dropped doors are the usual faults, fixed with a door adjustment or a new multipoint mechanism.
Garages and side gates
Up and over garage doors and side gates are common on the estates. We open, repair and replace garage locks and fit new gate locks.
Cars in the driveway
Keys locked in the car or a lost fob. We open cars and make keys on site, with the V5C and ID checked first.
Locksmith work in Burford, Bampton and the stone villages
Burford climbs up its steep High Street from the River Windrush, and almost every building along it is old Cotswold stone. Bampton has a similar character on a flatter site. The doors here are thick, often oak or painted softwood, and many still have a single rim nightlatch or an old two or three lever mortice.
Home insurers usually ask for a British Standard five lever mortice deadlock on the final exit door. On a period door we fit a BS3621 mortice lock sized to the existing door thickness, and where the old keep is set into stone we take extra care with the frame. On listed buildings we keep changes to the outside of the door to a minimum.
Burford is also busy with holiday lets, inns and small shops. Owners ask for key safes, spare key systems and fast lockout help when guests lose keys. Shop and café owners can find more on our commercial locksmith page.
Our route and arrival time to Carterton
We leave from 169 Woodstock Road and head west on the A40, past Eynsham and around the Witney bypass, then turn off for Brize Norton and drop into Carterton from the north. Burford is reached directly along the A40, and Bampton by way of Ducklington, south of Witney.
Carterton is one of our longer runs at roughly 17 miles from the city. A typical arrival is 35 to 50 minutes, a little more in the A40 rush hours and often less late at night. We give you a time on the phone and call you if it changes. Witney residents on the way are covered on our Witney locksmith page.
Securing a Carterton home before a long absence
Detachments, overseas postings and long contracts mean some Carterton houses stand empty for weeks at a time, often with one partner away and the other travelling too. An empty house with a basic cylinder and unlocked windows is an easy target, so we are often asked to look over a property before the owner leaves.
The checklist is short. Fit TS007 3 star cylinders to the front and back doors, add keyed window locks to ground floor and easily reached first floor windows, put a lock on the garage and side gate, and fit security bolts to the inside of any French doors. If neighbours or family are checking on the house, a key safe or a spare key held by someone you trust is safer than a key under a pot.
Our home security tips guide goes into more detail on each point.
Locked out in Carterton tonight?
Most lockouts happen when a uPVC or composite door is pulled shut with the keys on the hall table, or a nightlatch clicks shut behind you. On the phone we will ask whether the door was locked with the key or simply closed, because that tells us how long entry will take.
We open the door using non destructive methods first. Drilling is a last resort, and if it is needed we explain the extra cost before we start. Once you are inside we check ID or a bill with the address. Our lockout service page explains the process, and our guide to avoiding another lockout has a few simple habits that help.
If a child or vulnerable person is alone inside, or something is cooking or running water, call 999 first.
