Dave Oxford Locksmith is a 24 hour locksmith for Henley on Thames and the RG9 villages, usually reaching you in 40 to 60 minutes from North Oxford, with daytime lockouts from £59 and travel usually £20. We try non destructive entry first and fix the full price on the phone before we set off.
Henley is at the far south east corner of the county, so we are straight with you about distance. If a locksmith based nearer Reading or High Wycombe could reach you sooner that night, we will tell you rather than keep you waiting.
Henley on Thames and the RG9 villages we cover
RG9 takes in the town on the west bank of the Thames and a ring of villages along the river and up into the Chiltern Hills. Henley sits in South Oxfordshire, while Remenham on the far side of Henley Bridge is in Berkshire.
Our nearest regular towns are Wallingford in OX10, which we pass on the way, and Thame in OX9 further north. Every postcode we serve is listed on the areas we cover page.
How long does a locksmith take to get to Henley?
From our base at 169 Woodstock Road we take the ring road to the A4074 and head south past Nuneham Courtenay and Berinsfield to Crowmarsh, by Wallingford. From there the A4130 climbs into the Chilterns through Nettlebed and Bix and drops down the Fair Mile into Henley. It is roughly 23 miles.
| Destination | Route | Usual time |
|---|---|---|
| Nettlebed and Bix | A4074 then A4130 | 35 to 50 minutes |
| Henley town centre and Badgemore | A4130 down the Fair Mile | 40 to 60 minutes |
| Rotherfield Greys and Peppard | Lanes off the A4130 | 40 to 60 minutes |
| Harpsden and Shiplake | Through town on the Reading Road | 45 to 60 minutes |
Late at night the roads are quiet and we are usually at the quicker end. In the day, the town centre and the bridge can be slow, and during the Regatta in early summer traffic around the river is heavy, so we add that into the time we give you.
Georgian and period front doors in the town centre
The streets around the Market Place, Hart Street, New Street and Friday Street are full of old brick town houses, many listed and within the conservation area. Their front doors are usually solid timber panels with a rim nightlatch, often backed up by a mortice lock, and some have heavy old box locks that have been kept for their look.
On a door like that, opening it without damage matters more than usual. We work to keep the original furniture and fit any new lock into the existing cut outs. If your home insurer asks for a BS3621 five lever mortice, we can usually fit one without changing the face of the door. Worn or loose latches are often repairable through our nightlatch repair and replacement service, which saves the original where possible.
Doors on the riverside
Timber doors near the river can swell after a wet spell and start to bind on the latch. Before replacing anything, we check whether easing the door is the real fix, which is the cheaper job.
Victorian villas, post war estates and newer homes
Away from the old centre, Henley’s housing changes quickly. Each type tends to produce its own kind of locksmith call.
Victorian and Edwardian villas
Around the station and off the Reading Road. Tall timber front doors, sash windows and side gates. Typical jobs: nightlatch failures, window locks and gate locks.
Twentieth century estates
On the western side of town towards Greys Road. Mostly uPVC and composite doors with multipoint locks, where dropped doors and worn gearboxes are the common faults.
Riverside apartments
Communal entrances, flat doors and post boxes. Mailbox locks are opened or changed for £59 to £89 plus the lock.
For the uPVC and composite doors, an anti snap cylinder upgrade to TS007 3 star is the single most useful change, at £95 to £135 plus the cylinder.
Larger homes in Harpsden, Shiplake and the Chiltern villages
Many RG9 homes are large detached houses, often with outbuildings, garages, garden gates and sometimes a home safe. That brings a different mix of work to a town centre flat.
- Insurance requirements. Higher value policies often specify lock standards on every external door. We fit BS3621 mortice locks and TS007 cylinders and give you an itemised invoice that lists them.
- Brick and flint cottages. In Nettlebed, Highmoor and the Rotherfield villages, older cottage doors usually have nightlatches and mortice locks rather than uPVC multipoint systems.
- Safes. Lost codes or keys for a home safe can be dealt with by our safe opening service, with proof of ownership checked first.
- Outbuildings. Garage, workshop and gate locks are changed at the same visit to save a second trip.
Letting your Henley home for the Regatta
Henley Royal Regatta and the busy summer around it mean plenty of homes in town are let for a week or two, sometimes to people the owner never meets. Keys get copied, passed on and occasionally not returned.
- Before the let. Put away keys to rooms you are keeping private and make sure you know how many front door keys exist.
- During it. If guests lock themselves out, we open the door non destructively and check they are the authorised occupants.
- Afterwards. If a key has gone missing, a lock rekey at £45 to £65 per lock gives new keys without buying new locks.
