Our locksmith Kidlington service covers the whole OX5 postcode, from the village centre and Gosford to Yarnton, Begbroke, Islip and Thrupp, 24 hours a day. We drive up from North Oxford and usually arrive in 15 to 30 minutes. A daytime lockout costs £59 to £79, plus a £10 travel charge because Kidlington sits in our 5 to 15 mile band, and you hear the full figure before we set off.

Kidlington grew fast after the war, so a large share of its homes have uPVC doors that are now decades old. Add old stone houses around Church Street, canal moorings at Thrupp and the business units by the airport, and the work here looks quite different from Oxford itself.

How we get to Kidlington and how long it takes

From 169 Woodstock Road, we head north to the ring road. For Kidlington village, Gosford and Water Eaton we follow the Banbury Road past Oxford Parkway station and onto the A4260 at the Kidlington roundabout. For Yarnton and Begbroke we take the A44 from the Wolvercote roundabout instead, and Islip and Thrupp are a few minutes beyond Kidlington.

That is roughly four to six miles depending on your street, and it usually takes 15 to 30 minutes. The A44 and the Kidlington roundabout slow down at commuter times, so a Begbroke address at 8am may sit at the longer end. We tell you that on the phone instead of promising a time we cannot keep.

Why there is a £10 travel charge

Travel is free within 5 miles of central Oxford. Kidlington falls just past that line, so most OX5 jobs add £10. It is included in the fixed price we quote, never added on the doorstep.

Villages and neighbourhoods we cover around Kidlington

Kidlington villageGosfordWater EatonYarntonBegbrokeIslipThruppHampton PoyleShipton-on-CherwellBletchingdonKirtlington

Kidlington itself is the bulk of the work. Islip, Bletchingdon and Kirtlington are older stone villages, so expect more traditional timber doors there. Yarnton and Begbroke sit along the A44 and mix older cottages with post-war and newer homes. If your village is not listed, call; we cover most of the countryside between Oxford, Woodstock and Bicester.

Kidlington homes and the locks we see on them

Post-war and 1970s estates

The majority of Kidlington homes. Original timber doors have mostly been replaced with uPVC, now often 20 or more years old, with a euro cylinder and multipoint lock.

Most calls: handle needs forcing, door will not lock, cylinder upgrade.

Church Street and the old village

Stone houses and cottages near St Mary’s church, with solid timber doors and rim latches. Some are listed or in the conservation area.

Most calls: lockouts and adding a BS3621 mortice deadlock.

Newer homes on the edges

Composite doors with a factory-fitted cylinder and a multipoint lock that settles in the first year or two.

Most calls: adjustment, and swapping the standard cylinder for an anti-snap one.

If your door handle has to be lifted hard before the key turns, that is the classic sign of a dropped uPVC door. Our uPVC door lock page explains why, and an adjustment at £65 to £95 often saves the gearbox. Where the cylinder is the original basic type, an anti-snap cylinder upgrade to TS007 3-star is worth doing at the same visit.

Garages, side gates and back doors on Kidlington semis

A typical Kidlington semi or link-detached house has more than one way in: a front door, a back or patio door, a side gate and often an up-and-over garage door. When we change the front door lock for a new owner, the others are frequently forgotten, yet a previous owner’s garage key opens a garage that often connects to the house.

When you move in, it is worth walking round with us once. We can rekey the front and back doors to one key at £45 to £65 per lock, replace a worn garage door lock from £95 to £135 plus the lock, and fit a lockable bolt or garden gate lock on the side passage. Doing it in one visit means a single £10 travel charge rather than several.

Padlocks and hatches on the Oxford Canal at Thrupp

Thrupp is a well-known mooring spot on the Oxford Canal, and canal boats rely on padlocks for hatches, rear doors, gas lockers and bike chains. Lose the only key, or have a padlock seize after a wet winter, and you cannot get on board.

We remove padlocks without damaging the hasp where we can, and cut them where we must, once you can show the boat is yours, for example with your licence or mooring paperwork. We can then fit a new marine-grade padlock or a keyed-alike set so one key opens every lock on the boat. See padlock removal for the details.

Business locksmith work near Oxford Airport and Begbroke

The industrial estate along Langford Lane by London Oxford Airport, and the Begbroke Science Park nearby, are full of offices, workshops and labs. These buildings bring commercial jobs: cylinder changes when staff leave, keypad locks on internal doors, door closers that slam, and fire exit bars that stop latching.

We check authority to enter before opening any business premises, and every job is invoiced in full. An office lockout is £89 to £129, a commercial lock change £75 to £115 plus the lock, and a keypad lock £145 to £195 plus the keypad. Our commercial locksmith page has more on master key systems for larger sites.

Car keys and car lockouts in OX5

With Oxford Parkway station and its park and ride on the edge of Kidlington, plus the A34 and A44 nearby, we are often called to cars rather than houses here. A lost key at the station car park can be replaced at the car: we cut and program a new key after checking the V5C logbook and your ID. A spare copied from a working key is from £90, and replacing all lost keys from £170. Read more on our auto locksmith page.

For anything else, the guide to choosing a reliable locksmith lists what to ask any locksmith on the phone, including us.
