The calls we get most for this brand are snapped flip keys, keyless fobs that stop responding, and MX-5 owners down to a single key. We check your model by registration, agree a fixed price, then come to you. The main car key replacement page covers all other makes.
The Mazda flip key and its weak spot
For roughly fifteen years, depending on model, most Mazdas came with a two or three button flip key. It is a neat design, but the small pin that the blade pivots on wears, and eventually the blade flops loose or snaps off at the hinge. It happens to Mazda2, Mazda3, Mazda6, CX-5 and MX-5 keys alike.
A broken flip key does not always mean a new key. If the circuit board and transponder chip are undamaged, we can often fit a new case and blade, cut it to your locks and move the electronics across. If the board has cracked or the chip is lost, a new flip key from £120 is the answer.
Do not tape or glue a split key
A taped flip key can twist in the ignition and break off inside the barrel, which turns a key job into an extraction and possibly an ignition repair. If your Mazda key is wobbling, get it sorted before it snaps.
How Mazda advanced keyless entry works
Mazda calls its proximity system advanced keyless entry. With the fob nearby, you press the small black request button on the driver’s or passenger’s door handle, or the boot, to lock and unlock. Inside, you press the start button with your foot on the brake or clutch. You will find it on many CX-5, CX-3, CX-30, Mazda3, Mazda6 and later MX-5 models, depending on trim.
When the fob cell weakens, the request buttons stop working first, while the buttons on the fob itself may still respond. Most Mazda fobs take a CR2025 coin cell, though it is worth checking yours. The hidden mechanical key slides out of the fob and opens the driver’s door if the car will not respond at all.
If the fob cell is new and the request buttons still do nothing, the fob or the car’s keyless unit may have a fault. We can test both, and for other makes our smart key replacement guide explains proximity keys more generally.

Around Oxford the CX-5 is the Mazda we are called to most, usually a family car in Kidlington, Abingdon or Witney where the second key has gone missing over the years. The MX-5 is a close second in spring and summer, when roadsters come out of garages after winter and owners find the only key has a dead battery or a loose blade. Mazda2s are common as first cars for young drivers, and parents often ask us for a spare before handing one over.
Why older Mazdas sometimes need two keys programmed
On a number of older Mazda models the immobiliser expects at least two keys to be registered in the same session. When a programming session starts, the car can forget the keys it knew before, and it may not complete the process with only one key present.
In practice this means an all keys lost job on some older Mazdas involves making two keys, not one, and the price reflects that. We tell you on the phone if your model works this way. It also means a spare Mazda key is best made while you still have a working one, using our spare car key copying service, so you are never forced into the dearer route.
Newer Mazdas generally handle a single key without this rule, but we confirm by registration rather than assume.
Mazda2 Hybrid owners: your key is really a Toyota key
The Mazda2 Hybrid sold from 2022 is built by Toyota and shares most of its engineering with the current Toyota Yaris Hybrid, including the smart key system. It is a different car from the petrol Mazda2, and the key work follows Toyota methods.
That matters on an all keys lost job, because the newest Toyota platforms can need direct module access or a dealer. Our Toyota key replacement page explains how those systems work. As always, send the registration and we will tell you before booking.
Getting a Mazda key made in Oxford
Tell us the car
Phone 07520 644 595 or WhatsApp 07466 695655 with the registration and where it is parked. A photo of a broken key helps us decide between repair and replacement.
Fixed price
Spares from £90, flip keys from £120, keyless fobs from £160, all keys lost from £170. Travel is free within 5 miles of central Oxford.
Paperwork at the car
V5C logbook and photo ID, or written authority from the keeper for a company or lease car.
Cut, code, test
Blade cut to your locks, key registered with the immobiliser, then request buttons, start and locking all tested.
MX-5 owners locked out with the key inside: please do not cut the roof. A fabric hood costs far more to replace than our car lockout service, which opens cars without damage from £85. A Mazda dealer can also supply any key and suits cars under warranty, but the car usually needs to be taken there. Compare our full price list before you decide.
