We are the locksmith Summertown residents can reach fastest, because our base sits at 169 Woodstock Road in North Oxford, OX2 7NA. We open locked doors, change and repair locks and cut car keys across OX2, usually arriving in 10 to 20 minutes, with daytime lockouts at £59 to £79 and no travel charge. You get the price on the phone before we leave.
OX2 runs from Jericho and the Oxford Canal up through Summertown and Cutteslowe to Wolvercote and Port Meadow, and across the river to Botley. Each part has its own kind of front door, which is why this page is organised by street type rather than by service.
Our home patch: where we work in OX2
Being based here changes things in practical ways. We know which side roads fill with parked cars on school mornings near the Dragon School and St Edward’s, which Jericho streets are one-way, and how long the Botley Road takes at 5pm. When we give you an arrival time, it is based on the actual drive rather than a guess.
It also means we can come back easily. If a lock needs ordering in a particular finish, such as a polished brass sashlock to match an original door, we can secure the door that day and return to fit the matching part without a second travel charge.
North Oxford front doors and the locks they need
Four kinds of door make up most of our OX2 work. Here is what each usually has and what we tend to recommend.
Victorian villas, Park Town and Norham Manor
Tall, heavy painted doors, often in the North Oxford Victorian Suburb conservation area. Many houses are now split into flats, so there is a main door plus several flat doors inside.
Keep the original door. Add a BS3621 5-lever mortice and a good nightlatch.
Jericho terraces
Small workers’ cottages by the canal with narrow timber doors straight onto the pavement. Frames are often soft from age.
Check the frame and keep before fitting a heavier lock.
1930s semis in Cutteslowe and Sunnymead
Many originals have been swapped for uPVC with a euro cylinder and multipoint lock.
Upgrade the cylinder to TS007 3-star anti-snap.
Newer flats and houses in Wolvercote and Botley
Composite doors with a multipoint lock, plus communal entrances on apartment blocks.
Usually an adjustment or cylinder swap, not a new lock.
For the period houses, our mortice lock replacement and nightlatch replacement pages go into more detail on sizes and standards.
Does a Summertown period house need a British Standard lock?
Most home insurance policies ask for a BS3621 lock on the final exit door, and many big North Oxford houses still rely on a single old rim latch or an unmarked mortice from decades ago. If you are not sure, look on the edge of the door at the lock faceplate: a British Standard lock carries the kitemark and BS3621 stamp.
Fitting a 5-lever mortice deadlock into a thick period door costs £85 to £115 plus a lock at £35 to £65. We cut it in neatly so the door keeps its character, and we can fit a matching finish. If the existing lock is a good quality but worn, we will say so and repair it instead, under our no fix, no fee rule.
Sash windows are the other weak point in these houses. Simple sash stops or dual screws let you leave a window open a few inches for air while stopping it being lifted further. See window locks for the options, from £35 to £55 per lock plus the part.
Flat conversions, academic lets and changing tenants
North Oxford has a lot of rented property: visiting academics on one-year contracts, graduate students sharing a converted villa, and families renting near the schools. That turnover means a steady flow of lock changes between tenancies.
Often you do not need new locks at all. A lock rekey at £45 to £65 per lock resets the existing cylinder or mortice to new keys, so the old ones stop working. For a building with a main door and several flat doors, a keyed-alike or master key arrangement lets each tenant carry one key for their flat and the street door. Our guide for landlords and letting agents covers what to change at check-out.
Every job comes with an itemised invoice, which letting agents and deposit schemes generally want to see.
What happens when you call a Summertown locksmith from our base
- You call 07520 644 595. Tell us the street, the door type and whether the key is lost or just inside.
- We give a fixed price and a time. For most of Summertown and Jericho that is usually 10 to 20 minutes. Botley across the river can take a little longer at peak times.
- We check ID. A bill, a tenancy agreement or a driving licence with the address. If it is inside, we check it once the door is open.
- We open the door without damage first. Drilling is the last resort and we tell you the cost before doing it.
- You get an itemised invoice. Card or bank transfer, and the price does not change on the doorstep.

Keys locked in the car at Port Meadow or Wolvercote?
A surprising share of our OX2 car calls start at the Port Meadow car park in Wolvercote or the lay-bys near Godstow, after a walk or a swim when the keys were left on a seat or dropped in the long grass. Others happen in the Summertown shopping streets on a Saturday.
A daytime car lockout starts from £85 and we open the car without damaging the door or glass. If the key is genuinely lost rather than locked inside, we can make and program a new one at the car, from £170 for all keys lost, after checking the V5C logbook and your ID. Read how it works on our keys locked in car page. If a child or pet is inside on a warm day, call 999 first.
Neighbouring postcodes and other services
A local business on your doorstep
We are DBS checked and insured to £1 million. Car keys are cut and coded at the kerb, so a lost key outside a Summertown shop does not mean a tow to a dealer. See car key replacement, from £90.
Further south, around St Giles and the colleges, you are in the city centre, which has its own page for Oxford city centre OX1. North beyond the ring road, our Kidlington OX5 page covers Kidlington, Yarnton and Begbroke, and Marston across the Cherwell is on the Headington OX3 page. Every other town is listed on our areas covered page.
