We are a locksmith for Cowley and the whole of OX4, covering the Cowley Road, St Clement’s, Iffley, Rose Hill, Littlemore, Blackbird Leys and Temple Cowley day and night. We usually reach you in 15 to 30 minutes from North Oxford, a daytime lockout is £59 to £79, and there is no travel charge anywhere in OX4. The price is agreed on the phone before we drive.
East Oxford has more shared houses than any other part of the city, and its post-war estates have thousands of euro cylinder doors. Those two facts drive most of what we do here.
Cowley, Iffley and the Leys: where we go in OX4
We reach OX4 one of two ways. For St Clement’s and the Cowley Road we come through the city and over Magdalen Bridge, which is direct but slow at peak times. For Blackbird Leys, Littlemore and the business parks we take the ring road round to the eastern bypass, which is longer in miles but usually quicker. Either way, expect 15 to 30 minutes, and we will tell you which route we are taking.
Cowley housing and the lock behind each front door
The housing in OX4 changes street by street. This table shows what we usually find and the job it tends to produce.
| Area and housing | Typical door and lock | Most common call |
|---|---|---|
| Cowley Road, St Clement’s, Iffley Fields: Victorian and Edwardian terraces | Timber door, nightlatch, often an old mortice | Shared house lockouts and rekeys |
| Florence Park, Temple Cowley: 1930s semis | Replacement uPVC with euro cylinder | Dropped door, stiff handle |
| Rose Hill, Blackbird Leys: post-war council and housing association homes | uPVC or composite, euro cylinder, multipoint | Cylinder upgrades, lost keys |
| Greater Leys and newer infill: 1990s onward | Composite door, multipoint lock | Mechanism wear, gearbox failure |
| Iffley village: stone cottages, conservation area | Plank or panelled timber, rim latch | Adding a BS3621 deadlock |
| Tower and low-rise blocks | Flat door plus communal entry | Lockouts, mailbox locks |
Every lock change comes with three keys and an itemised invoice, which housing associations and insurers ask for.
Locksmith Cowley landlords use for HMOs
A large share of the terraces between the Cowley Road and Iffley Road are houses in multiple occupation, let to students, hospital staff and young professionals. Oxford City Council licenses HMOs across the city, and the inspections look closely at how people get out in a fire.
Escape doors and key-operated locks
Fire safety guidance for shared houses generally expects the final exit door to open from inside without a key. A mortice deadlock that needs a key on both sides is a common problem. Swapping it for a thumb-turn cylinder or a nightlatch with an internal handle usually fixes it. Check your licence conditions, then call us to price it.
Bedroom doors in HMOs usually need their own lock that still opens from inside without a key, so a tenant is never locked in. We fit these, and rekey the whole house between tenancies at £45 to £65 per lock. Our guide for Oxford landlords has a check-out checklist, and for a full eviction changeover see our tenant eviction locksmith page.
Why the Leys and Rose Hill need better cylinders
Most homes on the Blackbird Leys, Greater Leys and Rose Hill estates have a euro profile cylinder at the heart of the front door lock. Basic cylinders fitted when the doors went in are vulnerable to lock snapping, a quick attack that police forces across England have warned about for years.
The fix is a cylinder tested to TS007 3-star or Sold Secure SS312 Diamond. It costs £95 to £135 fitted plus a cylinder at £50 to £120, takes around half an hour, and works with your existing handles and multipoint lock. If you rent from a housing association, ask them first, as some will fit it as an improvement. Owners can read more on our anti-snap lock upgrades page.
We do not explain how snapping is done. If you want to check your own door, look at the cylinder face: a kitemark with three stars, or one star on the cylinder and two on the handle, is what you are after.
Early shifts, the car plant and the business parks
Cowley has been a car-making town for over a century, and the Mini plant still runs shifts around the clock, which is one reason we see plenty of requests for Mini key replacement on this side of the city. Add the Oxford Business Park and the Oxford Science Park at Littlemore, and you have a lot of people leaving home before 6am. When a key snaps in a uPVC door at that hour, waiting until the morning is not an option.
We work through the night, and a snapped key extraction is £45 to £75. For businesses on the parks, office lockouts are £89 to £129 and we check your authority to enter. Car keys locked in a car in a staff car park are a separate job; see keys locked in car, from £85 in the daytime.
Restaurants, shops and late closers on the Cowley Road
The Cowley Road is lined with restaurants, takeaways, bars and small shops, many trading until late and many with a roller shutter at the front and a fire exit to the yard at the back. Their calls come at awkward times: a shutter lock that will not turn after midnight, or a panic bar that has stopped latching so the back door cannot be secured before the staff go home.
We cover these through the night. A fire exit door lock repair keeps the door opening in one push to BS EN 1125 while still locking from outside, and a shutter lock replacement is £185 to £265 plus the lock. Further up at Templars Square and the Cowley shopping streets, the same applies to retail units.
Repairing rather than replacing uPVC locks in OX4
Many OX4 doors are twenty or thirty years old, and a handle that flops or a key that will not lock the door is usually a worn gearbox in the multipoint strip. We repair first. If the mechanism has to go, a matching replacement costs £85 to £125 plus the part at £65 to £150, and we source the right length and backset so the door does not need new holes. See multipoint lock replacement for symptoms and causes.
