Renault key replacement in Oxford covers key cards, hands-free cards and flip keys for the Clio, Megane, Captur, Kadjar, Scenic, Zoe and Trafic, made at your car and usually done the same day. A spare from a working key starts from £90, a remote key or insert card from £120, a hands-free card from £160 and a replacement when every key is lost from £170, agreed on the phone first.
Renault is one of the few makes that replaced the traditional key with a card, which brings its own faults. For other makes, see our car key replacement Oxford page.
The Renault key card, explained
From the early 2000s Renault began fitting a flat plastic card instead of a key on many models. There are two kinds, and they behave differently.
Insert card
You push the card into a reader slot on the dashboard or centre console and press START. Lock and open buttons are on the card itself.
Common on the second generation Megane and Scenic and on Laguna and Espace.
Hands-free card
The card stays in your pocket or bag. Touch the door handle button to open, press START to go, and the car locks as you walk away on many models.
Found on higher trims of the Megane 3, Scenic 3, Clio, Captur and Kadjar.
Both types hide a small emergency blade inside, which opens the driver’s door if the card battery or the car battery is flat. Knowing which card you have tells us roughly what the job involves.
Renault key replacement by model and year
| Model | Roughly | Key you are likely to have |
|---|---|---|
| Clio 2 and early Kangoo | Late 1990s to mid 2000s | Blade key with remote buttons in the head |
| Megane 2, Scenic 2, Laguna 2 | 2002 to 2009 | Insert card, some with hands-free |
| Megane 3, Scenic 3, Fluence | 2008 to 2016 | Insert or hands-free card depending on trim |
| Clio 4, Captur, Zoe | 2012 to 2019 | Flip key on lower trims, card on higher ones |
| Kadjar | 2015 to 2022 | Hands-free card on most cars |
| Clio 5, Captur 2, Arkana, Austral | 2019 onwards | Newer cards and remotes; check by registration |
| Trafic and Master vans | 2000s onwards | Flip remote key on most years |
Trim levels made a big difference on Renaults, so two cars of the same year can have quite different keys.
Card not detected: is it the card or the reader?
The most common Renault call we get is a car that suddenly refuses its card. Before anyone replaces anything, it helps to find out which part has failed.
| What you see | Likely cause | Usual fix |
|---|---|---|
| Card not detected with one card, the spare works | Fault in that card or its battery | New battery, repair or new card |
| Neither card is recognised in the slot | Card reader fault, well known on the Megane 2 and Scenic 2 | Reader repaired or replaced and cards matched to it |
| Hands-free opens nothing but the buttons work | Door handle sensor or aerial fault | Diagnose the handles rather than the card |
| Card cracked or swollen | Pocket wear or a leaking battery | Electronics moved to a new case where possible |
A reader fault is priced as an ignition repair. For battery swaps and card cases, see our car key repair service.
How the Renault immobiliser works, simply put
Each card or key holds a coded identity. The car keeps a list of the identities it trusts, and on many Renaults that list lives alongside the card reader and the body control unit. If the code from the card matches, the engine is allowed to start.
Making a new card means adding it to that list with dedicated equipment and, on some models, using the car’s security code. With all cards lost, many Renaults can still be done at the car; some newer models may need a Renault dealer. We check by registration before we travel. Coding a card you have already bought is covered by our car key programming in Oxford service, as long as it is new and the right part.
Dacia Sandero, Duster and Jogger keys
Dacia is part of the Renault Group and uses Renault engines, platforms and much of the same security technology. Most Sanderos, Logans and Dusters have a simple blade key or a flip remote rather than a card, which keeps spares affordable. Some newer Jogger, Duster and Sandero trims offer a hands-free card similar to a Renault one.
We handle Dacia keys at the same prices as Renault, from £90 for a spare copied from a working key. Send the registration and we confirm the key type.
Trafic, Master and other Renault family vehicles
Renault vans are everywhere on Oxfordshire building sites and in fleets. A Trafic or Master off the road for a lost key costs a trade a day’s work, so we come to the site or yard. Our van key replacement page covers the wider range of commercial vehicles.
Renault also shares parts with Nissan through the Renault Nissan Alliance. The Kadjar and the Qashqai of the same period, for example, sit on a shared platform, though their keys are different. If you run both makes, our Nissan key replacement page explains the Nissan side.
Renault dealer or mobile locksmith for a new card?
A Renault dealer can supply every card and code for every model, which matters for the very newest cars. Cards are often ordered in, and with no working key the car may need to be recovered to them.
We work at your car with the price agreed first. For a spare, we need your existing card or key present; see our spare car keys page. If your card is locked inside the car, our keys locked in car service gets you in without damage. A child or pet locked inside on a warm day is a 999 call first.
What to have ready for your Renault key
- Registration, and a photo of your card or key sent to WhatsApp 07466 695655 if you have one.
- V5C logbook, or the finance, lease or fleet paperwork.
- Photo ID matching that paperwork.
- Every remaining card, so they stay working and lost ones are removed.
Looking after a Renault card
Cards crack when they are bent, so a back trouser pocket is the worst place for one. On most cards the coin cell sits behind the emergency blade, which slides out to give access, and the battery type is printed on the old cell. Change it at the first sign of reduced range rather than waiting for a card not detected message on a cold morning. A spare card kept at home, away from the car, is the simplest protection against an all cards lost call.
