SEAT key replacement in Oxford means a new flip key or keyless fob for your Leon, Ibiza, Arona, Ateca, Tarraco, Alhambra or Mii, cut and coded at your car and tested before we leave, usually the same day. A spare from a working key starts from £90, a flip remote from £120, a keyless fob from £160 and a key when all are lost from £170, all agreed on the phone first.

We also look at Cupra keys, though the newest Cupras need checking first. For other makes, see our main car key replacement page.

SEAT and Cupra keys from the Mk1 Leon to the Formentor

CarsRoughlyKey and what to expect
Leon Mk1, Ibiza Mk3, Toledo, ArosaLate 1990s to mid 2000sEarly flip or fixed blade remote; older immobiliser, usually straightforward
Leon Mk2, Ibiza Mk4 (6J), Altea2005 to about 2012 (Ibiza to 2017)Flip key with the remote built into the head; very common in our work
Leon Mk3, Ibiza Mk5, Arona, Ateca, Tarraco2012 onwardsMQB era flip key; keyless entry and start on some FR and Xcellence trims
Leon Mk4, Cupra Formentor, Cupra Born2020 onwardsNewest generation fobs; spares often possible, all keys lost may need the dealer
Alhambra and Mii2010sKeys related to their Volkswagen twins, the Sharan and the up!

Trim matters as much as year. Two 2019 Leons can have quite different keys, so we look up the registration rather than guess.

Which Volkswagen Group car is your SEAT related to?

SEAT has been part of the Volkswagen Group since the 1980s and builds its cars on the same platforms. That is good news for keys: blanks, remotes and coding equipment are widely available, and the work is familiar.

Ibiza and VW PoloArona and VW T-CrossLeon and VW GolfAteca and Skoda KaroqTarraco and Skoda KodiaqAlhambra and VW SharanMii and VW up!

The Ateca is even assembled at Skoda’s Kvasiny plant in the Czech Republic. The key is still coded only to your car, and SEAT fobs carry their own badge and button layout, but knowing the twin helps us confirm the right part. Owners of the related cars can read our Volkswagen key page and Skoda keys in Oxford for the differences on those brands.

What happens inside the car when you turn a SEAT key

A chip inside the head of your SEAT key holds an encrypted code. When you turn the key or press START, the instrument cluster or a separate gateway module asks the chip for that code. If the answer is right, the engine control unit is allowed to run. The remote buttons are a different circuit, which is why a key can open the doors and still not start the car.

On the newest cars, such as the Mk4 Leon, key registration is more tightly controlled than on a Mk2 Leon and in some cases relies on the manufacturer’s online systems. That is why we sometimes need the old key present, and why a handful of the latest models with all keys lost are better handled by a SEAT or Cupra dealer. Coding a key you already hold is our car key programming service.

SEAT flip key will not flick out, and other common faults

Blade stuck or floppy

The small spring pin in the flip mechanism wears out, especially on Leon Mk2 and Ibiza 6J keys. A new shell, with your existing chip and circuit board moved across, is usually enough.

Buttons need a hard press

Worn rubber pads or tired switches on the board. A shell swap or board repair often brings them back.

Remote dead, engine starts

Usually the coin cell. If a new battery does not help, the remote may have lost its pairing to the car.

Key turns but nothing happens

Points to the chip or its coding rather than the battery, and needs a proper test.

Our car key repair service handles shells, buttons and batteries without replacing the whole key.

Cupra Formentor, Born and Leon keys: what we can do

Cupra began as SEAT’s performance badge and became a separate brand in 2018. Early Cupra Ateca and Cupra Leon models share SEAT keys of the same age, so they are usually handled in the same way.

The Formentor and the Mk4 Cupra Leon use the newest Volkswagen Group security, and the electric Born shares its underpinnings with the VW ID.3. Spare keys for some of these are possible at the car; all keys lost cases on the latest cars may need a Cupra or SEAT dealer for now. We check your exact car by registration and give you an honest answer before we set off.

One key for a newer Leon or Cupra?

Get the spare made while that key still works. On the newest cars it can be the difference between a visit from us and a recovery truck to the dealer.

SEAT spare key or lost key: how the visit differs

With a working key in hand, we read the car, cut and code the new key and check that both work for locking, starting and the boot. Our spare car key service explains this in more detail.

With no key at all, we gain entry without damage if the car is locked, cut a blade to the lock code, then register a new key and remove the lost ones from the car’s memory. That is more work, which is why it starts from £170 rather than £90. If the key is sitting inside the locked car, our keys locked in car service is the quicker route. A child or pet locked inside on a warm day means calling 999 first.

SEAT dealer or mobile auto locksmith?

A SEAT or Cupra dealer can supply and code every key with factory access, and for the very newest models that matters. Expect to order the key, wait for it to arrive and take the car in, by recovery if no key works.

We come to the car, agree a fixed price before we travel and finish most supported SEAT jobs in one visit. If your car is one the dealer should handle, we tell you so on the first call. Our Audi key replacement page covers the premium end of the same group.

Documents we check before making a SEAT key

  1. Registration. On the phone, or send a photo of the key to WhatsApp 07466 695655.
  2. V5C logbook, or finance, PCP or lease paperwork.
  3. Photo ID in the same name.
  4. Any keys you still have, so we keep them working.

Usually not. The spring in the flip mechanism wears out, and a new shell with your original chip and circuit board moved across normally fixes it for far less than a new key.
They share technology and similar parts, as both are Volkswagen Group cars on the same platform, but each key is coded to one car and the SEAT fob has its own branding.
Yes, on most Ibiza generations, at the car. We open it without damage if needed, cut a new blade, code the key and remove the lost one. It starts from £170.
Yes. The Mii is a twin of the VW up! and uses a simple flip remote, so spares and lost keys are usually straightforward at the car.
