Volvo key programming

Coding for a correct new fob you have already bought, from £55 to £95.

Volvo key replacement in Oxford is carried out at your car: we cut and code spare and lost keys for the XC40, XC60, XC90, V40, V60, S60, S90 and older S40, V50 and V70, usually the same day. A spare key copied from a working one starts from £90, a remote key from £120, a keyless fob from £160 and a key when all are lost from £170, agreed before we travel.

Volvo has used three quite different key designs since the early 2000s. Your registration tells us which you have and whether we can do it. For other makes, see our car key replacement in Oxford page.

Three eras of Volvo key: which is yours?

Turn key era

Roughly early 2000s to the end of the 2000s on many models: S40, V50, C30 and first generation S60, V70 and XC90. A blade, fixed or flip depending on model, turns in a normal ignition, with the chip and remote in the head.

Dash slot era

From around 2007 on the V70, XC70 and S80, then the first XC60, the S60 and V60 from 2010 and the V40. A rectangular remote pushes into a slot beside the steering wheel and you press START. Some cars had keyless drive, so the fob could stay in your pocket.

Keyless remote era

From the 2015 XC90 onwards, then the XC60, XC40, S60, V60, S90 and V90. A pocket remote with a hidden blade, and a start control on the centre console that you turn rather than press on many models.

Changeover years differ by model and facelift, so we confirm from your registration.

The Volvo immobiliser and CEM in plain English

Most Volvos keep their list of approved keys in a central electronic module, often called the CEM, which also runs lights, locks and other body functions. When the key is in the slot or the cabin, the car checks its coded identity against that list before allowing a start.

That shared role is why Volvo key work needs care. The CEM is not just a key memory, so a careless attempt can cause other faults. We read the car first, add the new key, remove any lost ones and then check that everything else still behaves normally.

Older S40 and V50 cars were developed during Ford’s ownership of Volvo and share engineering with the Focus of that period, so their keys are closer to a Ford key replacement job than a modern Volvo one.

Volvo key not found? Faults and likely fixes

Message or symptomCommon onLikely cause and fix
Insert key in ignition slot, or the slot will not accept the fobSlot era V70, XC60, S60, V40Worn slot mechanism or key; test a second key, then repair or recode
Key not foundKeyless era XC90, XC60, XC40Weak fob battery; place the fob in the backup reader position shown in the handbook
Remote locks only from very closeAll erasBattery, then the transmitter inside the fob
Fob stuck in the dash slotSome slot era carsUsually the slot unit, not the key; ignition repair
Flip blade will not spring outS40, V50, C30Broken flip spring; new shell, keeping your chip

Plenty of these are repairs rather than new keys. Our car key repair page explains shells, buttons and batteries.

Volvo key programming near me: coding a fob you already have

If you have bought a new Volvo fob, we can usually code it to your car at your home or workplace, as long as it is the correct part, has never been fitted to another car and suits your model year. Used remotes from breakers or auction sites are often locked to their first car, so send us a photo of the part number before buying.

Our car key programming in Oxford service is priced from £55 to £95 for coding a key you supply. If the blade also needs cutting, we quote that at the same time.

Can every Volvo key be made by a locksmith?

Straight answer

Spares for most turn key and slot era Volvos are routine, and lost keys on those cars usually are too. Keyless era cars from 2015 onwards are more varied, and some of the newest models, including recent electric Volvos, may only be supported by a Volvo retailer for now. We check before we travel.

A Volvo retailer has full access for every model and can set up features such as speed limited keys on cars that support them, which a locksmith key may not carry. The trade off is usually ordering time and getting the car to them. We come to the car with a fixed price and finish supported jobs in one visit. Both are reasonable; your car and timing decide.

Why a spare Volvo key costs less than a lost one

With a working key present, the car can be read and a new key added in one straightforward session, which is why a spare starts from £90 and losing the last key starts from £170. Many secondhand XC60s and V40s come with a single key, and that is the moment to get a second. Our spare car keys service covers how that visit works.

If your keys are locked in the car rather than lost, our keys locked in car service opens it without damage from £85 in the daytime. With a child or pet inside on a warm day, call 999 first.

Around Oxfordshire the big estates and SUVs dominate our Volvo calls: V70 and XC70 tow cars on village driveways, seven seat XC90s on school runs and XC60s on company lease. Plug in hybrid Recharge and T8 versions generally use the same style of remote as the petrol and diesel versions of that model, though we still confirm by registration.

The small V40 and C30 are popular secondhand buys and often arrive with only one key. If that sounds like your car, adding a second key now is far cheaper than an all keys lost visit later, and it is usually done in a single visit to the car.

Volvo Key Replacement Oxford Questions

A spare from a working key starts from £90, a remote key from £120, a keyless fob from £160 and all keys lost from £170. We confirm the exact price for your Volvo by registration before travelling.
Yes. We code Volvo keys at your home, work or roadside anywhere in Oxfordshire. Programming a correct new fob you already have is £55 to £95.
On keyless Volvos it is usually a weak fob battery. Put the fob in the backup position your handbook shows and start the car. If that works, change the battery. If not, the key may need recoding.
For many XC90 years, yes, at the car. Some of the newest models may need a Volvo retailer. We check your registration first and tell you plainly before setting off.
Often. A worn case, broken buttons or a tired battery can be fixed on your existing key. If the slot in the dash is the fault, that is an ignition repair rather than a new key.
Yes. The V40 uses a dash slot remote on most years, and spares and lost keys are usually made at the car in one visit. Bring the V5C and photo ID.
