Our VW key replacement in Oxford covers Golf, Polo, Up, T-Roc, T-Cross, Tiguan, Passat, Touran and Transporter: we cut a new Volkswagen key at the car, code it to the immobiliser and test it, usually the same day. A spare VW key starts from £90, a flip remote from £120, a Keyless Access fob from £160 and all keys lost from £170.

Volkswagen has used several immobiliser generations, and the newest Golf 8 era cars are not the same job as a Golf 6. Send the registration and we tell you straight away what is possible. For other makes, see our main car key replacement service.

Volkswagen key generations from Golf 4 to Golf 8

VW owners searching Volkswagen car key replacement often assume all VW keys are alike because the flip key looks similar for twenty years. Inside, the immobiliser has changed a lot. This is the rough picture, and the exact year of change varies by model.

What MQB means for your Golf, Polo or T-Roc key

MQB is the shared Volkswagen Group platform underneath the Golf 7, the latest Polo, the T-Roc, the Tiguan Mk2 and many Skoda, SEAT and Audi models. It brought a more secure immobiliser in which the key, the instrument cluster and the engine computer all have to agree. That is a good thing for theft protection and it means coding takes proper diagnostic equipment and a bit more time.

For an MQB VW with a working key, adding a spare is normally simple. When every key is lost, the job is still usually possible at the car, but it takes longer and is priced accordingly. We tell you before we come out whether your car is in the straightforward group.

Because the same platform sits under the Octavia, Superb and A3, our Skoda Octavia and Fabia key and Audi key replacement pages explain how the shared system shows up on those brands. Leon, Ibiza and Ateca owners can read the Seat key replacement guide.

Can you replace a key for a Golf 8 or the newest VWs?

An honest answer

On some 2020 onwards Volkswagens, particularly when every key has been lost, key coding may need access to Volkswagen’s own online systems, which only a main dealer has. Adding a spare to a car where you still hold a working key is more often possible. We check your registration before travelling and will tell you plainly if the dealer is the right route.

Telling you that up front costs us a job now and then, but it saves you a call out charge for a visit that cannot succeed. The rules also change as equipment is updated, so what was dealer only a year ago may now be possible on site.

Transporter, Caddy and Crafter keys for vans and campers

Oxfordshire has plenty of VW Transporters, both working vans and converted campers heading off for weekends in the Cotswolds. T5 and T6 keys use the familiar VW flip design, and the same worn hinge problem appears as on the cars. Some Transporters also have a separate key for an auxiliary lock or habitation door added by the converter, which is a mechanical job we can quote separately.

For Caddy and Crafter vans used by trades, we can code an extra key for each driver while we are with the van. Keep a note of which keys are coded so you know what to tell us if one is lost later.

VW spare key or all keys lost: how the jobs differ

You still have one working VW key

We copy the blade, code a new chip alongside the existing key and test both. Quickest and cheapest route, from £90 for a chip key and from £120 for a remote.

Get it done before the last key goes

Every VW key is lost or stolen

We cut a blade from the lock or key code, read the immobiliser data and code a fresh key, then delete the missing ones. From £170, more on keyless models.

Takes longer, still usually done at the car

Our spare car key copying page explains why a second key is worth having for any car. If you suspect a stolen key, have it deleted from the car promptly so it cannot be used.

VW key problems we fix without a new key

  • Blade that will not lock open. The flip hinge on Golf and Polo keys wears. A new shell with your existing chip and board avoids recoding.
  • Remote dead but the car still starts. Usually the coin battery. If a fresh battery does not help, the remote side may need resynchronising, which is a short car key programming job.
  • Key not recognised message on the dash. Often a chip that has come loose in a cracked key, or a fault in the reader ring around the ignition.
  • Keyless Access stops working on one door. Can be a fob battery or a door handle sensor. We tell you which before charging for a key.

Where a repair is genuinely cheaper than a replacement we will say so.

Before we arrive at your Volkswagen

Have the V5C logbook in your name ready, or a lease or finance agreement for company cars, plus photo ID. We cannot cut or code a key without seeing both, and that check is what stops someone else getting a key to your car. Tell us the exact spot where the VW is parked, especially in a busy car park like Seacourt or Thornhill park and ride.

If the key is locked inside the car, we open it first using our locked keys in car service. Any child or vulnerable person inside is a 999 call first. Our full price list shows every car service we offer.

VW car keys Questions

A spare Volkswagen chip key is from £90, a flip remote from £120, a Keyless Access fob from £160 and a key when you have lost them all from £170. Cutting, coding and testing at the car are included, and the price is agreed before travel.
Yes for most Polo generations, including the 9N, 6R, 6C and the MQB based Polo from 2017. Send the registration and we confirm the key type and the exact price.
For Golf 4 to Golf 7, usually yes, and we do it at the car. For Golf 8 the answer depends on the year and whether you still have a working key, so we check by registration first.
There is no recovery or dealer workshop time, because the key is cut and coded where the car is parked. Prices still vary by model, so compare like for like quotes before you decide.
Try a new battery first. If that fails, the remote may need resyncing or the board may be damaged. A worn case can be replaced while keeping your coded chip.
Yes for the base Transporter key on most T5 and T6 vans. Extra locks added by a converter are mechanical and quoted separately once we see a photo.
