Car key replacement in Oxford is done at your car: we cut the blade, code the chip to the immobiliser and test it, usually within an hour of arriving and typically 10 to 30 minutes after you call if you are inside the ring road. A spare copied from a working key starts from £90, and a new key when every key is lost starts from £170.

How a replacement car key is made at the roadside
The process is the same whether the car is outside your house in Jericho or in a supermarket car park in Kidlington. What changes is the key type and how much security the car’s immobiliser uses.
- Registration and details. You give us the registration, make, model and year. We look up the key blank, the chip type and the remote frequency the car needs, then agree a fixed price.
- Ownership check. On arrival we ask for the V5C logbook (or a finance or lease agreement) plus photo ID with a matching name. No paperwork, no key.
- Blade cut. The new blade is cut on our van machine to the code of your locks or to the pattern of a surviving key. Laser cut and standard blades are both handled on site.
- Chip and remote coded. Our programmer plugs into the diagnostic socket under the dashboard and adds the new key to the list the car accepts. The remote buttons are paired at the same time.
- Old keys removed. If keys are missing, we delete them from the car’s memory where the system allows, so a found key will no longer start the engine.
- Test before payment. You start the engine, lock and open the doors and try the boot button before you pay.

Lost every car key? What an all keys lost job involves
When there is no working key left, we cannot copy anything, so the key is built from scratch. The blade is decoded from the door lock, and the immobiliser is put into learning mode through the diagnostic port so a fresh key can be added. On many cars this also needs the security PIN, which our equipment can read on a large share of models.
That extra work is why all keys lost starts from £170 instead of £90. It is also why we strongly suggest a spare car key made while you still have one; the gap between the two prices is usually more than the cost of the spare.
Keys stolen, not just lost?
Report it to the police and your insurer first and keep the crime reference. Then ask us to remove the stolen key from the car’s memory as part of the job, so it is useless to whoever has it.

Main dealer or mobile locksmith for a new car key?
Both routes produce a key that works. The differences are where the work happens and how long you are without the car.
Main dealer
Usually needs the car at the dealership, which can mean a recovery truck if you have no key. Keys are often ordered in, so there may be a wait of several days. Dealers can do every model they sell, including the very newest.
Best for brand new models and some all keys lost jobs on premium cars.
Mobile auto locksmith
We come to the car and finish the job there, often the same day. No towing. The price is fixed before we travel. A small number of the latest models are locked to dealer systems, and we tell you if yours is one of them.
Best for most cars, especially when the car cannot be driven.

What to have ready before we arrive
- V5C logbook in your name, or a lease or finance agreement for company and hire cars.
- Photo ID such as a driving licence or passport, with the same name.
- Every key you still have, even a broken one. A snapped blade or a dead fob can save time decoding the locks.
- The car accessible, with room to open the driver’s door fully. Multi storey car parks are fine if we can reach the bay.

Key still in your hand but not working?
Not every problem needs a new key. Before you pay for a replacement, check which of these fits.
- Buttons dead, key still starts the car: replace the coin cell in the fob first. If that fails, the remote may only need re-pairing, covered on our car key programming page from £55.
- Key turns but engine will not fire: the chip has lost its coding or been damaged. Reprogramming is often cheaper than a whole new key.
- Key will not turn in the ignition: the barrel may be worn. That is an ignition repair, from £155 to £245 plus parts.
