When Does a Garage Door Lock Need Replacing?
A lot of garage lock faults can be repaired for £75 to £125, and we always look at that first. Replacement makes sense when parts are worn beyond adjustment or when you need new keys.
- The handle wobbles or droops because the cam or the housing has worn oval, so adjusting the cables no longer helps.
- The key turns but feels gritty or loose and the lock barrel moves in the handle, a sign the cylinder is near the end.
- You have moved house and have no idea how many garage keys are out there.
- A key has been lost from a bunch that also had your address on it.
- The door has been tampered with and the handle or latches are bent.
Rented properties are worth a mention too. Landlords and letting agents often ask us to replace garage locks between tenancies, and the itemised invoice makes the cost easy to pass on or record.

Garage T-Handle Lock Replacement
Most up-and-over garage doors in Oxford, from 1930s semis in Headington to 1980s estates in Kidlington, use a T-handle lock. The handle sits in the centre of the door, and turning it rotates a cam on the inside. That cam pulls two cables or rods which draw back the latches at each side of the frame.
Handles vary between manufacturers. Doors from makers such as Henderson, Cardale and Garador often use their own handle styles, and older doors may carry a pattern that is no longer made. We measure the door thickness, the spindle and the cam fixing, then fit a matching original style handle where one is available or a universal replacement kit that suits most doors. The lock is priced at £45 to £95 depending on what fits.
Spinning handle or worn cam?
If the handle spins freely, the fault may be the cam or a cable rather than the whole lock. We check this first, because renewing cables is a cheaper repair than a full handle replacement.
Latch Cables, Rods and Side Latches
On many up-and-over doors the latches are pulled by thin steel cables. Over years they stretch, fray or slip out of their clamps, so one side stays latched while the other releases. You end up with a door that opens on one side only, or that you can no longer lock at all.
We replace the cables, set the tension so both latches withdraw evenly, and check that each latch drops fully into its keep on the frame when you lock up. Bent or rusted latches are replaced at the same time. These parts live near the door’s spring and counterbalance gear, but we only work on the locking side. Springs and their brackets hold dangerous stored tension, and nobody should touch them except a garage door engineer.
Locks for Side-Hinged and Timber Garage Doors
Side-hinged doors, common on older houses and in villages around Oxford, behave like a pair of large external doors. The fixed leaf is held by bolts at the top and bottom, and the opening leaf carries the main lock.
Rim lock or nightlatch
Surface fitted and easy to install on thinner timber leaves. Convenient, but on its own it is the weaker option.

Mortice deadlock
Set inside the edge of a thick enough timber door. A BS3621 5-lever lock gives the same standard insurers expect on a house door.
Strongest choice where the door allows it.
Euro cylinder lock
Used on steel and uPVC side-hinged garage doors. We fit a TS007 3-star anti-snap cylinder where it suits.
Good with a keyed alike option for the house.

Adding Extra Security to a Garage Door
A standard up-and-over door is light steel with latches only at the sides, so the weak point is usually the bottom corners, which can be flexed outwards. If your garage holds bikes, power tools or has a door through to the house, a T-handle lock alone is not much protection.
Ground locks
A steel lock anchored into the concrete in front of the door, locking over the bottom rail. Visible from the street, which deters attempts in the first place.
Garage door defenders
A heavy lockable bar fixed to the drive that closes over the centre of the door. Popular where a ground lock is not practical.
Internal bolts
Bolts fitted inside the frame so the door can only be opened from within the house, ideal for integral garages.

What Happens on a Garage Lock Replacement Visit
- Photo and quote. You send the handle and the mechanism behind the door, and we agree a fixed price for fitting plus the lock.
- Arrival. City addresses are usually reached in 10 to 30 minutes. We carry common universal garage handles and cables in the van.
- Fitting and setting up. The old lock comes off, the new one goes on and the cables are tensioned so both latches engage.
- Testing. We lock and unlock several times from outside and check the door closes without force.
- Keys and invoice. You get the new keys and an itemised invoice listing the part and labour.
