Change, rekey or repair

We say which is cheapest for your lock before any work starts.

A door lock change in Oxford costs £65 to £85 plus the lock (£25 to £40 for a standard euro cylinder), done the same day with three keys included. We fit cylinders on uPVC and composite doors, nightlatches and mortice deadlocks on timber doors, and usually reach OX1 to OX4 within 10 to 30 minutes.

Changing a lock is not always the right answer, though. Below you will find when a change makes sense, when a cheaper rekey or repair would do, exactly what the money pays for, and which lock suits which door.

Change, rekey or repair: which do you actually need?

People ring asking for new locks when sometimes a different job is cheaper and just as secure. This quick guide is how we decide.

Your situationBest optionWhy
Moved into a house or flatChange, or rekey lever locksUnknown copies of old keys exist
Keys lost with your addressChange todayThe old key must stop working quickly
Lost a key, no address attachedRekey or changeLower risk, so choose on cost

Lock damaged in a break-inChangeA forced lock cannot be trusted

If your lock is sound and only the keys are the issue, read our page on rekeying a lock instead of replacing it. If the lock is misbehaving rather than compromised, door lock repair is covered by our no fix, no fee policy.

How much does it cost to change a door lock in Oxford?

The total is labour plus the part. Labour covers travel within 5 miles of central Oxford, removing the old lock, fitting the new one, testing it with the door open and closed, and the three keys.

Lock being changedLabourPartTypical total
Standard euro cylinder£65 to £85£25 to £40£90 to £125
Anti-snap cylinder (TS007 3-star)£95 to £135£50 to £120£145 to £255
Nightlatch (rim lock)£75 to £95£30 to £60£105 to £155
Mortice deadlock (BS3621 5-lever)£85 to £115£35 to £65£120 to £180

What moves the price within those ranges is mostly the lock. A long or offset cylinder on a thick composite door costs more than a common 35/35mm size; a deadlocking nightlatch costs more than a basic one. Evening work after 8pm adds £20. Our full price list for Oxford shows every job side by side.

Which lock fits which door?

The door decides the lock. Fitting the wrong kind can leave a door that looks secure but fails an insurer’s checks.

uPVC or composite door

Only the euro cylinder is changed; the multipoint strip stays. It is the quickest lock change we do, usually under half an hour. We measure from the centre screw to each face so the new cylinder sits flush.

Change the cylinder; consider anti-snap

Timber door, Yale-style latch

The latch is surface-mounted on the inside with a cylinder through the door. We match the backset and fit a deadlocking model where your policy asks for one. More on our Yale lock replacement page.

Nightlatch, ideally with a mortice

Timber door, mortice deadlock

The lock sits inside the door edge. Swapping like for like keeps the old pocket and keep; moving from 3 to 5-lever sometimes needs the mortice adjusted.

BS3621 5-lever

Back door, side door or shed

Often overlooked when people change locks after moving. If it opens into the house, it needs the same care as the front door.

Match the front door

For uPVC doors where the cylinder is fine but the hooks or gearbox fail, a cylinder change will not help. That is a multipoint lock job instead.

Changing locks after moving house

Moving day is the most common reason we change locks. A previous owner may have handed out spares years ago to a dog walker, a cleaner or a neighbour, and none of them have to give those keys back.

Most new owners and tenants in Oxford do the front and back doors at minimum. If you are buying, budget for the job alongside the removal van. If you rent, ask your landlord first: many agree readily, especially when you offer them a copy of the new key and our itemised invoice.

Two extras worth asking for on the same visit: keyed alike cylinders so one key opens both doors, and an upgrade to anti-snap cylinders if the existing ones carry no star rating. Doing it now costs only the difference in parts rather than a second call-out. Landlords managing several lets can see our notes for landlords and letting agents in Oxford.

Lost keys or a break-in: changing locks urgently

If keys vanished with something showing your address, such as a driving licence, a parcel label or a car with a sat nav home setting, treat the lock as compromised and change it the same day. We handle urgent lock changes at any hour, with an out of hours supplement of £20 after 8pm and £30 after 11pm.

After a break-in, a forced cylinder or a burst mortice keep should be replaced rather than repaired. If the door or frame also took damage, we can make it safe first; see our emergency door and frame repair service. If you cannot get in at all, start with our lockout service, and we can change the lock once you are inside.

Insurance claim?

Ask your insurer whether they want a crime reference number and a written invoice. We itemise labour and parts separately so the claim is straightforward.

What happens on the day of a lock change

  1. Measure and confirm. We check the door, lock type and size, and confirm the agreed price before removing anything.
  2. Proof of address. A quick ID or document check so we know the lock is yours to change.
  3. Fit the new lock. Old lock out, new lock in, keep and strike checked so the bolt throws cleanly.
  4. Test every way. Locked and unlocked from both sides, with the door open and shut, so it works the same tomorrow as it does today.
  5. Hand over keys. Three keys per cylinder, sealed until you open them, with the invoice listing every part.

Lock changes are one of many home and business locksmith services we run across the city and the county.

Door lock change Questions

For a standard euro cylinder on a uPVC or composite door, £65 to £85 labour plus £25 to £40 for the cylinder, so roughly £90 to £125 in total with three keys. Mortice locks and nightlatches cost a little more because the parts and fitting differ.
A euro cylinder swap usually takes under half an hour. A like-for-like nightlatch or mortice lock is often 30 to 60 minutes, and longer if the door needs cutting to take a bigger lock. We give you a time estimate when we quote.
Yes. You cannot know who else holds a key from previous owners, tradespeople or estate agents. Changing the front and back door locks on moving day is one of the cheapest security steps you can take.
Usually only with your landlord’s agreement, so check your tenancy first. Most landlords are happy if you ask, keep the lock to the same or a better standard, and give them a copy of the new key and the invoice.
On uPVC doors a new standard cylinder often costs about the same as rekeying, and it is quicker. On a good 5-lever mortice lock, rekeying at £45 to £65 can save the cost of a new lock body.
Yes, and we recommend it on any uPVC or composite front door. A TS007 3-star or Sold Secure SS312 Diamond cylinder resists snapping. See our anti-snap lock upgrades for brands and prices.
