Citroen key replacement in Oxford covers family cars and working vans alike: we cut and program a spare from £90, a remote flip key from £120, a keyless key from £160, and a replacement when every key is lost from £170. Berlingo, Dispatch and Relay vans are everywhere on Oxford’s building sites and delivery rounds, so we aim to get trades moving the same day. The price is agreed on the phone, and within the city we usually arrive in 10 to 30 minutes. We check your V5C and photo ID at the vehicle.
Lost the only key to a Citroen van?
For a plumber, electrician or courier, a van without a key is a day’s income gone. Berlingo, Dispatch and Relay vans often end up with a single key in circulation because spares drift away between drivers. When that last one disappears, the van is going nowhere. The same applies to Transits, Sprinters and other makes, which are covered on our van key replacement page.
- Call with the registration and location. Site address, yard or roadside: we confirm the key type and give you a fixed price.
- Have the paperwork ready. The V5C, or for a company or lease van a letter of authority plus your ID. We do not make keys for vans we cannot link to you.
- We cut and code at the van. The lost key is erased, so a former employee or whoever finds it cannot drive off with your tools.
- Add a key for every driver. While the van is in programming mode, extra keys are quicker and cheaper to add than on a separate visit.
Key locked in the van with your tools? Our vehicle lockout service starts from £85 during the day and from £130 at night or at weekends.
Citroen car keys, from the C1 to the C5 Aircross
The C1 is the odd one out. It came off the same Czech production line as the Toyota Aygo, so its key has more in common with a Toyota than with a C3. If you also run an Aygo, our Toyota key replacement page covers it.
From the C3 and C4 Picasso era, most Citroens use a three-button flip key, sometimes with a fixed-blade remote on older vans. Higher trims of the newer C3 Aircross, C4 and C5 Aircross offer keyless entry with push button start. Older DS3 and DS4 models, sold as Citroens before DS became a separate brand, use the same flip keys as their Citroen relatives.
How a Citroen decides whether to start
Citroens of the last two decades keep their list of approved keys in a central control unit that Citroen calls the BSI, short for built-in systems interface. Inside your key there are two separate jobs going on: a passive chip that the BSI checks before the engine will run, and a battery-powered remote that locks and unlocks the doors.
That split explains a common Citroen puzzle. If the doors respond but the dash shows the immobiliser warning, the chip side is the issue. If the engine starts on the key but the buttons do nothing, it is the remote side, usually a flat cell or a worn switch. Knowing which half has failed tells us whether you need a new key or only car key programming.
Older Citroens also came with a scratch card carrying an access code for the immobiliser. The system is shared with Peugeot, so our Peugeot key replacement page explains what to do if that card has gone missing.
Worn Citroen fobs: battery, buttons and blades
Most Citroen key problems we are asked about are wear rather than loss. Van keys in particular live in work trousers alongside screws and coins, and they take a beating.
Weak range. If you have to stand right beside the door before it reacts, start with a new coin cell of the same number as the old one. It is the cheapest test there is.
Buttons sunk into the case. The rubber pad wears through and the switch underneath stops making contact. A new case can fix it if the board is healthy; if not, a new remote key is the answer.
Blade worn smooth. A key that has to be jiggled in the door or ignition is cut from the car’s code rather than copied from the tired blade, so the new one fits like the original did.
Citroen key replacement Oxford: dealer or mobile auto locksmith?
Citroen main dealer
Keys ordered from Citroen against the VIN and programmed in the workshop. A good fit for very new models, or cars with electrical faults already under investigation.
Vehicle must reach the dealer, so a tow if no keys are left
Mobile auto locksmith
Keys cut and coded where the car or van stands, including site compounds, retail park car parks and driveways. Price fixed by phone, travel free within 5 miles of central Oxford.
Same visit for most spares and lost key jobs
Either way the key ends up coded to your vehicle. The difference is mostly logistics, waiting time and cost, and for a van that has stopped earning, logistics usually decide it.
Citroens we check carefully before travelling
Depending on the year, a few Citroens need extra checks before we promise anything:
- The electric C4 and other recent models on the newest Stellantis platforms, where independent software can trail the launch.
- Relay vans, which share much of their hardware with the Peugeot Boxer and Fiat Ducato. The key differs by year, so the registration matters.
- Keyless C5 Aircross models where every key is lost, which can need the manufacturer on some years.
- Any Citroen with a BSI fault, where the key may not be the real problem.
We tell you plainly if a dealer is the better route. For every brand we cover, see our car key replacement in Oxford page.
Where we meet Citroen owners around Oxford
Our base is at 169 Woodstock Road in North Oxford. Vans on sites in Barton or Littlemore, cars at Redbridge Park and Ride or the Kassam Stadium, or a C3 on a driveway in Didcot: everything is done at the vehicle. Travel is £10 up to 15 miles from central Oxford and £20 up to 25 miles.
The single biggest saving is getting a second key made before the last one goes. Copying a working Citroen key starts at £90, against £170 when none are left. Read how spare car key copying works, or compare the newer Corsa on our Vauxhall keys page if your fleet is mixed.
