Sheds to containers
Garden sheds, allotment stores, site containers and lock up garages.
Our padlock removal service in Oxford takes off padlocks where the key is lost, the combination is forgotten or the mechanism has seized, usually reaching OX1 to OX4 within 10 to 30 minutes. We try to open it without damage first and only cut it as a last resort, and we check you own whatever it is protecting before we touch it.
Padlocks vary from a cheap brass lock on a garden shed to a hardened steel disc lock on a shipping container, so we price from a WhatsApp photo and agree the figure on the phone. Prices include VAT and labour. This is one of the smaller jobs on our locksmith services list, and it is often done in a single short visit.
Proof of ownership before we remove a padlock
A padlock is nearly always guarding something of value: tools, a motorbike, stock, a container of building materials. That makes padlock removal a job criminals would love to outsource, so we treat ownership checks as part of the work, not a formality.
Things that usually satisfy us:
- ID showing the address where the shed, gate or garage is
- A tenancy agreement, storage unit contract or allotment letter in your name
- For a site container, a letter or email from the contractor or hire company confirming you are authorised
- For business premises, confirmation from the owner or managing agent, the same check we apply on commercial locksmith jobs
If the details do not add up we will not go ahead, and we would rather lose the job than open a lock for the wrong person. If a padlock is on a bike lock or chain round a bike, our bike lock removal page explains the extra checks we make there.
How padlock removal works: open first, cut last
We do not publish how locks are defeated, but the order we work in is simple and worth knowing.
Assess
We look at the brand, the shackle thickness, whether it is open or closed shackle, and how it is fitted. A cheap laminated padlock and a boron shackle disc lock need very different handling.
Non-destructive opening
Many keyed and combination padlocks can be opened with specialist locksmith techniques without damage. If it opens this way you may be able to keep using it with a new key made, or a reset code.
Controlled cutting
If that is not practical, we cut the padlock itself with the right tool for its hardness, shielding the hasp, door and paintwork. The hasp is usually reusable.
Replace
We can fit a better padlock straight away, so the shed or gate is not left open overnight.
Seized padlocks are common on outdoor sheds and gates. Sometimes cleaning and lubricating a stuck lock brings it back to life, which costs less than removal, and that falls under our no fix, no fee lock repair policy.
Padlock security ratings explained
If you are replacing a padlock, it is worth buying one rated for the job. Two systems matter in the UK.
| Rating | What it means | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| CEN grade 1 to 2 (EN 12320) | Low security, light resistance to attack | Luggage, lockers, garden bins |
| CEN grade 3 to 4 | Medium to high security, hardened shackle | Sheds, side gates, allotment stores |
| CEN grade 5 to 6 | High security, tested against heavier tools | Garages, containers, compounds, trailers |
| Sold Secure Bronze, Silver, Gold, Diamond | Independent attack testing, Diamond being the hardest to defeat | Motorbikes, bikes, shutters, high value stores |
The padlock is only as strong as the hasp
A grade 6 padlock on a thin hasp held by four short wood screws is wasted money. Fit a hasp that hides its own fixings when closed, use coach bolts through the door, and keep the padlock body tight to the hasp so there is no room to get a tool behind it.
Open shackle, closed shackle or disc padlock?
Open shackle
The classic shape with the shackle fully exposed. Easy to fit to almost any hasp or chain, but the exposed shackle is the part attacked most often.
Fine for low risk sheds and bins.
Closed shackle
Shoulders on the body guard most of the shackle so very little steel is exposed. Needs a hasp with a matching loop.
Our usual pick for gates, garages and outbuildings.
Disc or puck lock
A round body with a hidden shackle, designed for container lock boxes and van hasps.
Best for containers and vans with a lock box.
Combination padlocks save carrying keys, but cheap ones are easy to read. If you go for one, pick a rated model and change the code from the factory setting.
Sheds, gates, garages and containers
Most padlock calls in Oxford fall into a handful of situations.
Garden sheds and bike stores
Keys lost during a house move, or a previous owner’s padlock still on the shed. We remove it and fit one you hold the keys to.
Side gates and bin stores
Padbolts with weathered padlocks that have rusted solid. For a keyed alternative, see our garden gate lock options.
Lock up garages
Rows of garages behind flats often use padlocks on hasps or shoot bolts. If the garage door lock itself is the problem, our garage door locksmith service covers it.
Containers and site stores
Shipping containers on building sites and farms, usually with disc locks inside a lock box. We need authority from the site manager or hire company first.
Shop roller shutters are a separate job with their own lock types and pricing, listed under shop shutter locks on our Oxford price list.
After the padlock is off
Once the padlock is removed, check the hasp and staple while you have the chance. Bent hasps, rusted screws and soft timber all weaken the next lock. We can refit them with stronger fixings at the same visit.
Keep the spare key for the new padlock somewhere other than the shed it locks, and register serial numbers for keyed padlocks if the maker offers it, so replacement keys can be ordered later. If you are worried about the rest of the property after losing a set of keys, our guide on avoiding lockouts in future covers key habits that also apply to padlocks.
