Kia key replacement in Oxford is done at your car: we cut and code a spare Kia key from £90, a remote flip key from £120, a smart key from £160, or a new key when every one is lost from £170. In the city we usually reach you within 10 to 30 minutes, and the price is fixed on the phone before we set off. We work on the Picanto, Rio, Ceed, Stonic, Niro, Sportage and Sorento, and we check your registration first so you know whether your exact Kia is one we can do. Have the V5C logbook and photo ID ready for when we arrive.
Which Kia key does your car use?
Kia has changed its keys a lot over the last twenty years, so the first thing we ask for is the registration. It tells us the model year and trim, and on a Kia the trim matters as much as the model. Two Sportages from the same year can leave the showroom with completely different keys.
Plain chipped keys (roughly 2004 to 2011)
Early Picanto and Rio models, and the first cee’d, often came with a simple metal key with a transponder chip moulded into the head. Some had a separate remote, some had none. These are the cheapest Kias to sort out because there is no remote to pair.
Flip keys (from around 2010)
The folding key with lock, unlock and boot buttons spread across the range and is still supplied on lower trims of the Picanto, Rio, Stonic and Ceed. The blade springs out sideways, and that spring and hinge are the parts we see fail most often.
Smart keys with push button start
Higher trims of the fourth and fifth generation Sportage, the Niro hybrid and electric, the XCeed, Sorento and EV6 use a smart key that stays in your pocket. A small mechanical blade slides out of it for the driver’s door when the fob or the car’s battery is flat.
How the Kia immobiliser works, in plain English
Every UK-market Kia from this period has an engine immobiliser, because European rules made them standard on new cars from late 1998. A chip in your key sends a code to an aerial ring around the ignition barrel or, on a smart key Kia, to aerials inside the cabin. If the engine computer does not recognise that code, the engine will not run, however well the blade is cut.
To add a key, the car has to be put into a learning mode, and on most Kias that requires a security PIN linked to the vehicle. Our equipment handles this through the diagnostic port under the dashboard. While the car is in that mode we also delete any key you have lost, so a fob dropped in a car park cannot start your car later.
Kia and Hyundai belong to the same group and share much of their key technology, so if there is also a Hyundai on your drive, our Hyundai key replacement page covers its models. The keys are not interchangeable, though: each one is coded to a single car.
You may have read about Kias stolen in the United States using a USB cable. That trend involved American models sold without an immobiliser. UK cars had one fitted, so that method does not apply here, although keyless Kias can still be targeted by relay theft, covered on our smart key replacement page.
Common Kia key faults and what usually fixes them
| Symptom | Likely cause | What we do | Price guide |
|---|---|---|---|
| Blade flops loose or will not stay out | Broken hinge pin in the flip key | New flip key, coded to the car | Remote or flip key from £120 |
| Buttons only work right next to the car | Weak coin cell in the fob | Fresh battery, then a range test | No programming needed |
| Key not detected message on a Sportage or Niro | Flat smart key battery or a damaged fob | Test at the start button, then battery or new smart key | Smart key from £160 |
| Car unlocks but will not start | Chip not read, or key dropped from memory | Reprogram through the diagnostic port | Programming only £55 to £95 |
| Key turns stiffly or sticks in the ignition | Worn blade or worn ignition barrel | Fresh cut key, or ignition repair | Ignition repair £155 to £245 + parts |
Most Kia flip keys and smart keys take a flat coin cell, often a CR2032, but check the number on the old battery before buying. If you already have a key cut and just need it coded, our car key programming service covers that on its own.
Kia key replacement Oxford: dealer, locksmith and your 7-year warranty
Kia owners often ask whether an independent locksmith affects the 7-year warranty. That warranty covers manufacturing faults in the car. A correctly coded key does not change the engine computer or any other component, so in our understanding it has no bearing on the cover. For certainty, your warranty booklet or a Kia dealer can confirm it.
A Kia dealer orders a key cut to the factory code and programs it in the workshop. That is a sound route, particularly for a brand-new model, but it means getting the car to them, which is hard with no key at all. If a key has to be ordered in, the wait can run to days.
We bring blanks and programming kit to the car, whether it is outside your house in Marston, in a staff car park at the John Radcliffe or at a supermarket in Botley. Spares and most all keys lost jobs are finished in one visit. If a dealer is the better choice for your car, we say so on the phone. For other makes, see our main car key replacement in Oxford page.
Down to one Kia key?
Copying a working key is the cheapest Kia key job, from £90. Once the last one is gone you are paying for a key made from scratch, from £170. Our spare car keys page explains how copying works.
Kias we may not be able to do
We would rather tell you before we travel than after. Depending on year and trim, these can be outside what a mobile locksmith can handle:
- The very newest Kia models, where programming software can lag behind the car’s launch.
- Kias using a phone or NFC card as a Digital Key, such as some EV6 trims. We can usually still supply the physical smart key, but the phone key is set up through Kia’s own app.
- Cars whose engine computer has been swapped or damaged, for example after water got into the footwell.
- Imported Kias built to a non-UK specification.
Send the registration by WhatsApp to 07466 695655 and we will check before anyone sets off. If your car turns out to be one we cannot do, you have lost nothing by asking.
