Skoda key replacement in Oxford means a new Octavia, Fabia, Superb, Karoq or Kodiaq key cut and coded at your car, usually the same day, without towing it to a dealer. Copies of a working key start from £90, flip remotes from £120, KESSY keyless fobs from £160 and replacing every lost key from £170.

Skoda shares its key and immobiliser technology with the rest of the Volkswagen Group, which is good news for availability. We check your registration before setting off so we bring the right blank. Other makes are on our car keys Oxford page.

Skoda keys model by model

Each Skoda line has gone through a couple of key changes. These are the ones we are asked about most in Oxfordshire.

Octavia

The Mk2 (roughly 2004 to 2013) uses a flip key much like a Golf 5. The Mk3 moved to the MQB platform with a squarer flip key, and the Mk4 from 2020 brings newer fobs. KESSY is offered on many Mk3 and Mk4 trims.

Fabia

Mk2 and Mk3 Fabias use straightforward flip keys related to the VW Polo of the same era. The Mk4 from 2021 sits on newer underpinnings, so we check the year carefully.

Superb

The Mk2 and Mk3 Superb are favourites for executive and private hire work. Mk3 cars from 2015 are MQB based and many have keyless entry and start.

Kodiaq, Karoq and Kamiq

Skoda’s SUVs from 2016 onwards use MQB era keys, often keyless. The older Yeti uses an earlier flip key similar to the Octavia Mk2.

The Citigo city car is a twin of the VW Up, and the Scala sits close to the latest Fabia. If your model is not listed, the registration tells us what we need to know.

What is Skoda KESSY and why does it change the price?

KESSY stands for Keyless Entry, Start and Exit System. It is Skoda’s name for keyless entry with push button start: the fob talks to aerials in the doors and cabin, and the car opens when you touch the handle and starts when you press the button. Volkswagen calls the same idea Keyless Access.

A KESSY fob holds more than a flip key, so it costs more to supply and takes longer to code. That is why keyless Skoda keys start from £160 rather than £120. Every KESSY fob has a slide out emergency blade for the driver’s door, and most models have a marked backup position, often near the steering column, where a fob with a flat battery can still be read. The handbook shows the spot for your car.

If you want a deeper look at proximity keys across all makes, see keyless and smart key replacement.

Keys for private hire and high mileage Skodas

Octavias and Superbs are among the most common private hire cars in the country, and Oxford is no exception, with plenty working the station, the hospitals and the airport runs. These cars clock up big mileages, and their keys take a beating: thousands of presses, constant pocket wear and plenty of drops on to taxi rank tarmac.

For drivers, a lost key is a lost shift. We come to the car wherever it is, and we can code a second key at the same visit so a backup sits at home. Keep the itemised invoice for your records or for any claim through your insurer.

Ownership checks for hire vehicles

If the car is leased or owned by an operator, bring the agreement or a letter from the owner along with your photo ID. We check this on every Skoda, not just private ones.

Skoda key not working? Likely causes

Before booking a replacement, it is worth working through the usual suspects, because some of them cost little or nothing to fix.

  • Remote range has shrunk or buttons are hit and miss: almost always the coin cell. Swap it first.
  • Flip blade wobbles or jams: the hinge spring is worn. A new case with your chip moved across is cheaper than a new key.
  • KESSY works on one door but not another: can be the fob battery, or a handle sensor on that door. We test before replacing anything.
  • Dash shows a key or immobiliser warning: the chip is not being read. Recoding or a new transponder normally sorts it.

Where only coding is needed for a key you already have, our car key programming service is priced at £55 to £95.

Your Skoda key replacement, step by step

  1. Send the registration. Call or WhatsApp us with the registration, the model and where the car is.
  2. Get a fixed price. We confirm the key type and give you a price and arrival time before we leave North Oxford.
  3. Show your documents. V5C logbook or lease paperwork, plus photo ID, when we arrive.
  4. Cut, code and test. The blade is cut to your locks and the key coded, then starting, locking and any KESSY function are tested.

If the keys are locked inside, our locked out of car service opens it first from £85 in the daytime.

Skoda dealer or local auto locksmith?

A Skoda dealer can supply a key ordered against your vehicle identification number, which typically means waiting for it to arrive and getting the car to the workshop for coding. We do the cutting and coding where the car is. For a spare on a car you can drive, the choice is mostly about convenience and price. With no key at all, avoiding a recovery truck is the bigger factor.

For the newest Skodas, some all keys lost jobs may still need the dealer, and we will say so rather than come out for nothing.

Skoda car keys Questions

Our Skoda keys start from £90 for a copy of a working key, £120 for a flip remote, £160 for a KESSY fob and £170 when every key is lost. The price for your model and year is fixed before we travel.
Yes. Most Octavia Mk2 and Mk3 keys, and many Mk4 keys, are cut and coded at the car on your drive or in the street. We check your registration first to confirm.
The technology is closely related and many blanks are similar, but each key is coded to its own car. A Golf key will not start an Octavia even if it looks almost identical.
Usually. Open the driver’s door with the hidden emergency blade, then hold the fob at the marked backup spot shown in your handbook and press start. Replace the battery as soon as you can.
We come to you anywhere in Oxford and the surrounding towns. A spare made while you still have a working key is the cheapest option; our spare car key service explains why.
Yes. We work on private hire Superbs and Octavias regularly and can code an extra key at the same visit. Bring the operator agreement if the car is not registered to you.
