Model identified first
Faceplate codes such as 3G114 tell us the exact modern replacement.
Union equivalents
Chubb door locks now carry the Union name. Same pocket, same key style.
Chubb keys sorted
Lost Chubb keys handled by re-levering or a new lock, not guesswork blanks.
Period doors respected
Old brass faceplates and escutcheons kept or matched on heritage doors.
Our Chubb lock replacement service in Oxford identifies your old Chubb mortice lock or Chubb rim latch from the faceplate, then fits the current Union equivalent in the same recess, usually within 10 to 30 minutes of your call inside the city and from £85 plus the lock. Where the original is still sound, we can often re-lever it to new keys instead.
Plenty of Oxford doors still carry a Chubb lock fitted decades ago. Most are good locks; the trouble is knowing which model you have, where to get keys, and what replaces it today.
What happened to Chubb door locks?
For most of the twentieth century Chubb was so common on British front doors that people still say “a Chubb” when they mean any lever mortice lock. The company dates back to the early nineteenth century and built its name on detector locks and safes.
Over the years the business changed hands. Today the door lock side sits within ASSA ABLOY, and the locks that used to be boxed as Chubb are sold under the Union brand, which was already part of the same group. The Chubb name itself now belongs to a separate fire and security company and no longer appears on new domestic door locks.
For you, that means two things. First, a Chubb lock is not obsolete just because the name has gone: the current Union models are direct descendants and usually fit the same recess. Second, if you search for a “new Chubb lock” you will mostly find Union boxes or old stock.
Identifying an old Chubb lock on your door
Chubb stamped a model code on most faceplates. Open the door, look at the metal plate on its edge, and note any letters and numbers next to the Chubb name.
3G114 family
The best known Chubb 5 lever mortice deadlock and, on later versions, kitemarked to BS3621. Union still sells a 3G114E successor in the same sizes.
Sashlocks with a handle
Chubb sashlocks combine a latch and a bolt. Codes vary by year, and a photo of the plate including the spindle hole lets us match the handle centres.
Older 3 lever models
Common on back doors and internal doors from the 1950s to 1980s. Fine for a store room, but below the standard insurers ask for on exit doors.
Chubb rim locks
Surface-mounted latches and rim deadlocks on the inside face of timber doors, often with a Chubb cylinder on the outside.
If the stamp has worn smooth, the key helps. Genuine Chubb lever keys usually show the brand on the bow and sometimes a key number. Send both photos by WhatsApp to 07466 695655 and we will tell you what it is.
Chubb keys: why a copy needs the right blank
Lever keys are not like the flat pin keys cut at most shoe repair counters. Each step on a Chubb key bit lifts one lever, and the blank itself has to match the lock’s keyhole profile and bit length. A key cut on a near-enough blank may turn halfway, then jam, or slowly wear the levers.
- Key numbers and registration. Some Chubb and Union locks were supplied with a key registration card. Official copies of those keys are ordered against the card by the registered holder, which stops strangers getting copies.
- Detector levers. Some older Chubb designs include a detector feature. If the wrong key is tried or the lock is tampered with, the lock can stay jammed until the correct key resets it. If your Chubb suddenly refuses its own key after someone tried another, tell us that on the phone.
- Badly cut copies. If one copy works and another sticks, the copy is usually the problem, not the lock. Using it can strain the levers, so stop and get it checked.
We cut extra keys where we can match the blank, priced at £8 to £25 per key.
Chubb lock replacement: modern equivalents that fit
| Old Chubb lock | Usual modern replacement | Door work needed |
|---|---|---|
| Chubb 5 lever deadlock (3G114 type) | Union BS3621 5 lever deadlock, same case size | Usually none |
| Chubb 5 lever sashlock | Union BS3621 sashlock with matching handle centres | Usually none, handles may refit |
| Chubb 3 lever deadlock or sashlock | BS3621 5 lever upgrade | Recess sometimes enlarged slightly |
| Chubb rim nightlatch | BS3621 deadlocking nightlatch | Mounting holes may be reused |
| Chubb rim deadlock on a cottage door | Modern rim deadlock or mortice upgrade | Depends on door thickness |
Where your door has an attractive old brass faceplate or keyhole cover, we can usually keep the escutcheon and fit a new lock behind it. For the general rules on BS3621, case sizes and sashlock versus deadlock choices, see our mortice lock replacement guide. For Chubb-branded latches on the inside face of the door, the rim lock and nightlatch page covers backsets and fitting.
Should you keep your Chubb lock?
A well made Chubb 5 lever lock can outlast the door it is fitted to. Replacing it purely because it is old is not always the best use of your money.
Keep it if
The faceplate shows BS3621, the key turns smoothly, the bolt throws fully and you know where every key is. If keys have gone missing, re-levering for £45 to £65 through our lock rekey service keeps the original lock with new keys.
Replace it if
It is a 3 lever model on an exit door, the case is cracked after a forced entry, parts for that model are no longer available, or the key has been sticking for months and servicing has not helped.
A stiff Chubb is often a door problem in disguise. Timber doors in older Oxford houses swell in damp winters and shrink in summer, pushing the bolt against the keep. A lock repair visit at £55 to £85 often fixes it for good.
Chubb locks in Oxford rentals and older houses
Chubb locks turn up on the front doors of North Oxford villas, the back doors of 1930s semis in Headington and Cowley, and countless room doors in shared houses. Landlords inheriting a property often find a mix of Chubb, Union, ERA and unbranded locks with no record of who holds keys.
At a change of tenancy we can re-lever the good Chubb locks, replace the rest with matching Union models, and give you an itemised invoice per door. If you manage several properties, our locksmith service for landlords and businesses can also set up keyed-alike or master key arrangements. The wider picture for letting agents is covered in our guide for Oxford landlords and letting agents, and every other home and business job is listed on our locksmith services page.
