Fiat 500 key replacement in Oxford is done at the car: a spare copied from your working key costs from £90, a new remote flip key from £120, and a key for a 500 with no keys left from £170. Cracked flip key cases and worn buttons are the classic Fiat 500 complaints, so we check whether your key needs a new shell or a whole new key before quoting. We also cover the Panda, 500X, 500L, Tipo, Doblo and Abarth 595. In Oxford we usually arrive within 10 to 30 minutes, at a price agreed first.
Fiat 500 keys from 2007 to the electric 500
The modern 500 arrived in 2007 and stayed in production, with a facelift in 2015, for well over a decade. For most of that time it used much the same three-button flip key, which is why so many tired ones are still in use around Oxford.
2007 to 2015
A flip key with lock, unlock and boot buttons. The rubber button covers wear through and the plastic around the blade pivot cracks, usually long before the chip inside fails.
2015 facelift onwards
A similar flip key with small revisions. Some later cars have different remote electronics inside the same look, so we confirm the exact part by registration.
Electric 500 (from 2020)
The newer electric 500 is a different car underneath and uses a keyless smart key on most versions. Those keys are priced from £160, and depending on year the car may need a Fiat dealer.
The Ford Ka built from 2008 to 2016 came from the same Polish factory as the 500 and shares much of its engineering, but its key is a Ford-branded part. If that is your car, our Ford key replacement page is the one to read.
Broken Fiat 500 key: case, blade or electronics?
Cracked case, buttons still work
If the circuit board and chip are fine, moving them into a fresh shell is often enough. No programming is needed because the chip and remote keep their codes.
Buttons dead, car still starts
The transponder works but the remote side does not. Try a new coin cell first, usually a CR2032 on 500 flip keys. If that fails, the board may be worn and a new remote key is the fix.
Will not start, warning on the dash
The chip is not being recognised. That can be a damaged transponder, a key that has lost its coding or a fault on the car side. We test before quoting.
Blade bent or snapped
We cut a new blade from the car’s lock code and fit it to your key head where possible. If part of the blade is stuck in the ignition, we extract it first.
If you have bought a cut key elsewhere and only need it coded, car key programming costs £55 to £95.
Fiat Code: how the Fiat immobiliser decides
Fiat’s immobiliser has carried the name Fiat Code for many years. A chip in the key head sends its code each time you turn the key. If the car does not recognise it, the engine will not keep running; on many Fiats it fires briefly and then cuts out, with a warning lamp on the dash.
Older Fiats came with a red master key alongside the everyday blue ones. The red key was needed to add new keys, and owners who lost it faced an expensive fix. The 500 does not rely on a red key. Programming is done through the diagnostic port, using security data read from the car’s electronics, which our equipment handles on most models.
While a new key is being added, we remove any lost keys from the car’s memory. A 500 key that went missing in town stops being a risk the moment that is done.
Panda, 500X, Tipo and Fiat vans
Panda
The 2003 to 2012 Panda commonly had a plain chipped key, often with no remote at all. The Panda from 2012 onwards uses a flip key in the same family as the 500’s.
500X and 500L
Larger cars with flip keys on most trims, and keyless entry on some 500X versions. The registration tells us which you have.
Tipo
Flip keys on most versions. A popular family and fleet car, so all keys lost calls often come with a lease agreement rather than a V5C in the driver’s name.
Doblo and Ducato
Working vans for trades, and the Ducato is also the base for a great many motorhomes. Owners touring the Cotswolds sometimes lose the cab key far from home. We deal with the vehicle key; habitation door locks are a separate job we can look at on the same visit.
Abarth 500 and 595
The same flip key family as the 500, with Abarth branding on the case.
Fiat is now part of Stellantis alongside Peugeot, Citroen and Vauxhall, but the 500’s key system predates that, so its keys are not shared with a Peugeot key of the same age.
What happens when we replace a lost Fiat 500 key
Ring or WhatsApp us with the registration and where the car is. A 500 squeezed onto a narrow Jericho street or parked in the Westgate car park is no problem, as long as we can reach the driver’s door and the dashboard.
At the car we check the V5C and your photo ID, then cut a new blade to suit the locks. The key is coded through the diagnostic port, lost keys are erased, and we test starting, locking and the boot button. You pay once everything works, and you get an itemised invoice.
Two keys, not one
Fiat 500s are often second cars shared around a family, and the spare tends to vanish. Copying a working key costs from £90, while a key made when none are left starts at £170. A spare Fiat key made now is the cheaper route.
When a Fiat dealer is the better choice
We would point you to a dealer for an electric 500 whose year our equipment does not yet support, for a car with a body computer fault, or where the key has to be ordered from Fiat for security reasons. Otherwise the dealer route usually means transport and a wait, and we can finish most 500 and Panda jobs where the car stands.
We cover Oxford and the surrounding county. Travel is free within 5 miles of central Oxford, £10 up to 15 miles and £20 up to 25. Every make we cover is on our car key replacement in Oxford page, the full figures are on the price list, and if your keys are sitting on the passenger seat of a locked 500, our locked keys in car service starts from £85 in the day.
