Who pays to replace a mailbox lock in a block of flats?
This is the first question most people ask, and the answer depends on the building and your agreement.

Can Royal Mail open my post box?
No. Royal Mail does not hold keys to private mailboxes in blocks of flats. Their postal workers use a separate access arrangement for the front loading slot, or a trade button or fob for the communal door, but they cannot open the door of your individual box.
Some purpose built mailbox banks are rear loading, where the postal worker fills them from a locked room behind. In that case the building managers hold that key, but still not yours. Your own key is the only way into your box, which is why losing it is such a nuisance.
Opening a mailbox without damaging it
Mailbox doors are thin steel or aluminium, and in a bank of boxes a bent door can stop the neighbouring boxes closing too. So we always work to open the box cleanly rather than force it.
Check the address
We confirm you live at the flat the box serves, using ID or a recent bill in your name.
Open the box
We use non-destructive locksmith methods first. Most mailbox locks open cleanly and the door is undamaged.
Fit a new lock
We match the size and cam, fit the new lock, and check the door shuts and locks properly.
Hand over keys
You get new keys, usually two or three. Extra copies cost £8 to £25 each.
If the box was forced by someone else and the door is bent, we straighten what we can and tell you honestly if the door or whole unit needs replacing by the maker.
Mailbox lock sizes and types
Almost all post boxes in UK flats use a small cam lock: a short cylinder through the door with a flat cam behind that catches the frame. The details vary between brands and models.
- Body length. Mailbox locks are usually short, as the door is thin. A lock that is too long can stop the box door closing flat.
- Cam shape. Straight, cranked or hooked cams, and different lengths, depending on the box design.
- Rotation. Most turn 90 degrees, a few turn 180 degrees.
- Face style. Round flush faces are most common. Some older wall mounted boxes use a small lever or cylinder lock instead.

Post box locks in Oxford flats and student blocks
Oxford has many blocks of flats where a bank of mailboxes sits in the entrance hall: purpose built student accommodation around the city, converted Victorian houses in East Oxford and Jericho split into flats, and newer apartment blocks around Headington, Botley and the station area. High turnover of residents means keys go astray at nearly every change of occupant.
In converted houses the boxes are sometimes cheaper units screwed to the wall, where locks wear out faster. In larger blocks the bank is often a steel unit built into the wall. We work with both. If the communal entrance door is also giving trouble, for example slamming or not closing, we can look at the communal door closer at the same visit.
Changing every mailbox lock in a block
Managing agents and freeholders sometimes ask us to change a whole bank at once: after a run of post thefts, when a building changes hands, or when nobody knows who holds which key. We fit locks keyed to differ, label each key to its flat number, and hand the set over to the agent for distribution.
If you want a master key so the agent can open any box for maintenance, we can supply that through a commercial master key system, though many agents prefer not to, for residents’ privacy. We give an itemised invoice listing each box, which helps when recharging leaseholders through the service charge.
Where the building also needs its main entrance or bin store locks changed, a rekey of the communal locks can be done in the same visit.
Signs your post box lock is not doing its job
Mail stolen from communal boxes is a real problem, because letters carry bank cards, PIN notices, driving licences and statements that can be used for identity fraud. Watch for these warning signs:
- The key turns but the door can be pulled open, which usually means a worn or slipped cam.
- Scratches or a bent corner around the lock face.
- Expected letters, such as a new card, never arrive.
- Your box opens with a neighbour’s key, a sign of a cheap or keyed alike lock.
If you think post has been taken, contact your bank and Royal Mail, and consider reporting it to Action Fraud. Then get the lock changed so nobody else holds a working key. A worn cam is often repaired rather than replaced, which falls under our no fix, no fee lock repair policy. While cards are being replaced, ask the sender to post them to a work address or collect in branch.
