Our garage door opener repair service in Oxford deals with electric up-and-over, sectional and roller doors whose remotes have stopped working, whose motors stop short or that are stuck shut with no power. We usually reach city addresses within 10 to 30 minutes, 24 hours a day, and the price is quoted on the phone once we know the make of opener.
We are locksmiths, so we focus on remotes, pairing, power checks, manual release and the locks on the door. Where a motor or a spring needs replacing, we tell you and point you to a garage door installer.
Garage Remote Not Working? Check These First
A large share of opener calls are solved before anyone arrives. Run through these in order, and stop at the first one that fixes it.
- Battery in the handset. Most fobs use a coin cell. If the LED is faint or does not light, swap it.
- The wall button inside the garage. If the door works from the wall button, the motor is fine and the problem is the remote or its pairing.
- Power to the opener. Check the plug or fused spur in the garage ceiling and your consumer unit. A tripped RCD after a storm is common.
- A second remote. If a spare works, the first handset has failed or lost its code.
- The photocells. On sectional and roller doors, two small sensors either side of the opening stop the door if their beam is blocked. Wipe them and clear anything in the way.
If none of these help, send us the make and model from the label on the motor unit and we can tell you what we can do.
Common Electric Garage Door Faults and Who Fixes Them
| Fault | Likely cause | Can we fix it? |
|---|---|---|
| Remote does nothing, wall button works | Dead battery or lost pairing | Yes, pairing or a compatible replacement remote where the system allows |
| Nothing works at all | Power supply, fuse or failed control board | We check power and the receiver; a failed board goes to an installer |
| Door reverses just before closing | Photocells misaligned or a close limit set wrong | Often, depending on the opener |
| Motor hums but the door does not move | Door too heavy, broken spring or a stripped drive | We diagnose; spring or motor work goes to an installer |
| Door stuck shut with the car inside | Any of the above | Yes, we release it safely and secure the garage |
If your garage has a manual door that is simply locked or jammed, that is a different job, covered by our garage door locksmith service.
Garage Remote Reprogramming and Replacement Handsets
Most garage openers learn their remotes through a button on the receiver or motor unit. Some use fixed codes, set with tiny switches, and many newer systems use rolling codes that change every time you press the button. Whether we can add or replace a remote depends on which system you have and its age.
Remote lost or stolen
We wipe the receiver’s memory so the missing handset no longer works, then pair the remotes you still have plus a replacement. This matters if the remote was taken from a car along with your house keys.
Remote dropped or damaged
Where a compatible handset is available for your opener, we pair it on site. For less common makes we source the right handset first, then come back to pair it.
Moved into a house with a garage opener
Nobody knows how many remotes the last owners handed out. Clearing the receiver and pairing only your handsets is the garage equivalent of a lock rekey.
Electric Garage Door Stuck: Using the Manual Release Safely
Every electric garage door has a manual release, usually a cord with a red handle hanging from the carriage on the rail, so the door can be moved by hand in a power cut. Some garages without a side door also have an outside release key on the door itself.
Springs are dangerous: do not touch them
Only pull the release with the door fully closed if you can. If a spring has broken, a door released while open can fall suddenly and with great force. Never adjust, unhook or loosen a spring, a cable drum or a spring bracket yourself, and keep children and pets away from a door that is behaving oddly.
If the door feels very heavy once released, will not stay up on its own, or you heard a bang, leave it closed and call. We can release the door safely, get the car out where possible, and leave the garage locked with a manual lock or a bolt fitted on the inside until an installer replaces the spring or motor.
What a Locksmith Can and Cannot Do With Garage Openers
Jobs we take on
Remote pairing and clearing, receiver and power checks, photocell cleaning and alignment, manual release, opening a door stuck shut, and locks or extra security on the door itself.
Usually done in one visit.
Jobs for a garage door installer
Replacing a motor, gearbox or control board, replacing or tensioning springs, and resetting the balance of large sectional or roller doors.
We say so on the phone, before charging a visit.
That honesty saves you money. A call-out that cannot fix a failed motor is wasted, so if your description points to the motor or springs we will tell you before we set off. Our price is always agreed first, and a cancellation once we have set off is £40.
Keeping an Electric Garage Secure Across Oxford
An electric door is only as secure as its remotes and its manual release. A remote left in a car on the drive, or an outside release that is not locked, can let someone in without touching a lock. Keep handsets out of view, clear lost ones from the receiver, and ask us to check the outside release key on your door.
Integral garages on newer estates in Bicester, Didcot and around Barton Park often lead straight into the house, so the internal door matters just as much. A good mortice deadlock or bolts on that door stop the garage becoming the way in.
