Sized to your door
Measured either side of the fixing screw so the cylinder sits flush, not proud.
Three keys included
Extra keys £8 to £25 each, cut on the spot for most cylinders.
Thumbturn or key both sides
Choose a keyless inside turn for quick exit or keys on both faces.
One key for every door
Front, back and garage side door cylinders can be keyed alike.
We offer euro cylinder lock replacement across Oxford 24 hours a day, fitting a new cylinder for £65 to £85 plus the lock at £25 to £40, with three keys included and most jobs done the same day. In the city we usually reach you within 10 to 30 minutes. The cylinder is the barrel your key goes into, held by a single screw in the door edge, so swapping it changes your keys without touching the rest of the lock.
That makes it the quickest way to lock out lost or stolen keys on uPVC, composite, aluminium and many timber doors.
When a new euro cylinder is the right fix
Changing the cylinder is the answer when the fault or the risk sits in the key barrel itself, not in the rest of the door. Typical reasons we are called out:
- Keys lost, stolen or not returned. A previous tenant, builder or ex partner may still have a copy. New cylinder, new keys, old ones useless.
- Moving into a new home. You have no idea how many keys are in circulation. Our same day door lock change page covers this in more detail.
- Key stiff or sticking. Worn pins and grit make the key hard to insert or turn.
- Key spins but nothing happens. Often a cracked cam on the back of the cylinder.
- Key snapped inside. We extract it first, and only replace the cylinder if the barrel is damaged.
If the handle is the part that feels wrong, rather than the key, the problem is more likely the mechanism. Our uPVC door lock replacement page helps tell the difference.
How to measure a euro cylinder for replacement
Euro cylinders are sold by two numbers, such as 35/45 or 40/50. Each number is the distance in millimetres from the centre of the fixing screw hole to one end of the cylinder. The first figure is normally the outside, the second the inside.
| Measurement | Where to take it | Typical values |
|---|---|---|
| Outside length | Fixing screw centre to the outer face | 30mm to 50mm |
| Inside length | Fixing screw centre to the inner face | 35mm to 55mm |
| Overall length | Both added together | 70mm and 80mm are common on uPVC |
| Projection past the handle | How far the cylinder sticks out beyond the handle plate | Ideally 0mm to 3mm |
An offset cylinder, such as 35/45, is common because the inside handle plate is often thicker. Ordering a symmetrical size by mistake can leave a few millimetres exposed on the street side. We measure on the door before fitting, so you do not need to remove anything yourself.
A cylinder that sticks out is a weak point
Too long a barrel on the outside gives a burglar something to grip. If yours projects more than a few millimetres past the handle, it is worth replacing even if the key still works. Our anti snap locks page explains the security side.
Single, double, thumbturn or half euro?
Double (key and key)
A keyhole on both faces. The usual choice for front doors where you want to lock from inside with a key.
Thumbturn
Key outside, a small knob inside. You can lock and open from inside without hunting for a key, which matters in a fire. Not ideal next to glass that could be broken to reach through.
Single (half euro)
A keyhole on one side only. Used on garage doors, gates, roller shutters and some key switches.
Key and key with emergency function
Lets one key work from outside even when another key is left in the inside. Useful if family members tend to leave keys in the door.
The guide to avoiding lockouts explains why the emergency function cylinder or a thumbturn can save a call out.
Standard euro cylinder or anti snap?
A standard cylinder from £25 is fine for an internal door, a shed or a garage side door. On the main entrance of a house, especially a uPVC or composite door, we recommend a rated anti snap cylinder instead.
Standard cylinder
Fitting £65 to £85, lock £25 to £40. Same day, three keys. Suitable for low risk doors and quick key changes.
Best for internal and outbuilding doors
TS007 3-star cylinder
Fitting £95 to £135, cylinder £50 to £120. Tested against snapping, drilling, picking and bumping. Brands include the Ultion high security cylinder range.
Best for front and back doors
The full comparison, including what the markings mean and how insurers view them, sits on our dedicated upgrade page rather than here.
Keyed alike and restricted key cylinders
Many Oxford homes have a front door, back door and side gate or garage all on different keys. When replacing cylinders we can supply a keyed alike set, so one key opens every door. It is especially handy on terraces in Jericho or East Oxford where the back gate opens onto a shared alley.
For landlords, offices and HMOs, restricted key cylinders are worth considering. Copies can only be cut by the authorised supplier against a registration card, so tenants cannot quietly duplicate keys. Our commercial locksmith service can extend this into a master key system across a building.
If you have several locks that are all in good condition and simply want new keys, a lock rekey may be cheaper on some cylinder types.
Why euro cylinders stiffen and fail
Inside a euro cylinder are small spring loaded pins that line up when the correct key is inserted. After thousands of turns, the pins and the key both wear, so the alignment becomes less precise and the key starts to catch. Cheap copies of keys make this worse, because each copy is a little less accurate than the original.
Dirt and weather play a part too. Front doors facing the prevailing wind take rain straight into the keyhole, and a barrel that is never lubricated slowly gums up. A clean and lube costs £45 to £75 and is worth trying first if the key is merely stiff.
The cam at the back is the other weak spot. It is a small steel or zinc lever, and if a jammed door has been forced with the key it can crack, leaving the key turning freely without moving anything.
What happens on a euro cylinder visit
Proof of address
We check ID or proof of address before changing locks on a home, which protects you as much as us.
Measure and match
Both sides measured, the right offset chosen and the cam position checked against your mechanism.
Swap and test
Old cylinder removed through the door edge, new one fitted and tested with every key from both sides.
Keys and invoice
You receive three keys and an itemised invoice, useful for insurers or a landlord.
