Spare keys from £90
Copied from your working key and coded to the immobiliser.
Our Toyota key replacement in Oxford covers spare keys from £90, remote and flip keys from £120, hybrid smart keys from £160 and all keys lost from £170, made at the car and usually finished the same day. Toyota is one of the friendliest brands for mobile key work: most Yaris, Aygo, Auris, Corolla, C-HR and RAV4 keys can be cut and paired on site. The newest platforms, roughly from 2019 depending on model, can need extra steps on an all keys lost job, and we check that against your registration first. Other brands are on our car key replacement hub.
Check the letter stamped on your Toyota key
Toyota made life easier for owners by marking many keys with the chip generation. Look at the metal blade close to the plastic head. On many keys from around 2010 you will see a small stamped letter.
- No letter, older key: usually an earlier fixed code or 4D type chip, found on many Toyotas up to the late 2000s. Copies are normally quick and inexpensive.
- G: a G chip key, common from around 2010 to 2015 on Yaris, Auris, Avensis and Hilux.
- H: an H chip key, which replaced the G chip from around 2014 onwards on many models.
- No blade at all: a smart key, used on hybrids and higher trims with push button start.
Send us a photo of both sides of the key on WhatsApp along with the registration and we can usually price it within minutes. If every key is lost, the registration alone tells us the same thing.
Toyota models in Oxford and the keys they use
| Model | Common key type | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Aygo (2005 to 2014) | Two button remote key | Built alongside the Citroen C1 and Peugeot 107, which share a similar key |
| Yaris (2005 to 2020) | Remote key, smart key on hybrid trims | The most common Toyota key job in Oxford |
| Yaris (2020 onwards) | Smart key on many trims | Newer platform, check by registration |
| Auris and Avensis | Remote key, smart key on some | Popular with commuters and fleets |
| Corolla (2019 onwards) | Smart key | All keys lost may need module access |
| C-HR and RAV4 | Smart key | Hybrid push button start |
| Prius | Slot in fob or smart key by generation | Early cars used a fob pushed into the dash |
| Hilux and Proace | Remote or transponder key | Work vehicles where speed matters |
If you drive an Aygo, its key is close kin to those on our Citroen key replacement page, because the three cars were built in the same factory.
Toyota hybrid smart keys explained simply
A Toyota smart key is a small radio transmitter. When it is within a short distance of the car, aerials in the doors and cabin detect it and the car allows the doors to open and the hybrid system to switch to READY. Inside the fob there is a mechanical blade for the driver’s door, and a coin cell that powers the radio side.
If the cell runs flat, most Toyotas can still read the key at very close range. With your foot on the brake, touch the fob to the start button. The handbook for your model shows the exact spot. If the car starts, a new cell is the fix and no locksmith is needed.
Spare key on a newer Toyota? Do it now
On the latest Corolla, Yaris, C-HR and RAV4, adding a key while one still works is usually far simpler than an all keys lost job. If you bought the car with a single smart key, our spare car key service is the cheaper route.
Toyota’s premium brand uses closely related smart keys, which we cover on the Lexus smart key page.
Toyota key faults we fix most often
Worn Yaris remote buttons
The rubber pad on older Yaris and Aygo remotes splits and the buttons stop responding. Often a new shell and pad is enough, with the original chip moved across.
Blade worn smooth
High mileage keys wear until they catch in the ignition. We cut a fresh blade to the lock rather than copying the worn key, then code the chip.
Remote out of sync
After a battery change some remotes stop locking. Resyncing is a quick job, covered by our Toyota key programming service.
Ignition barrel sticking
On older models the barrel wafers wear and the key will not turn. We check the lock first, because a new key will not fix a worn barrel.
Toyota key replacement in Oxford: what to have ready
- The V5C logbook in your name, or other proof that you own the car.
- Photo ID matching the logbook, such as a driving licence.
- Any keys you still have, even broken or unreliable ones, as they can speed things up.
- Access to the car and room to open the driver’s door fully.
Leasing and fleet Toyotas, which are common on the Auris, Corolla and Proace, are registered to the finance or fleet company rather than the driver. In that case we need a letter or email from the keeper confirming you may have a key made, along with your own ID. It is worth arranging before you call, because we will not cut the key without it.
We then cut the blade, pair the key, remove missing keys from the car where the system allows, and test locking, starting and the emergency blade before taking payment. A spare on an older Yaris is often done in well under an hour. A newer hybrid with no keys left takes longer.
From our base on Woodstock Road, the city centre, Summertown and Headington are usually 10 to 30 minutes away, traffic depending. Travel is free within 5 miles of central Oxford.
Should you go to a Toyota dealer instead?
A Toyota dealer can supply a key for any model and is the right choice if the car is under warranty or is one of the few recent models where aftermarket keys are not yet possible. The car normally has to be taken there, and if no key works that may mean recovery on a truck.
A mobile auto locksmith works at the car, which suits an Aygo outside a student house in Cowley as much as a Hilux on a farm near Bicester. For most Toyotas we can do the job on the same visit. If we cannot, we say so on the phone. If your key is fine but locked inside, see locked keys in car help, and compare all our car and home lock prices in one place.
