As your garage door locksmith in Oxford, we open garage doors that are locked, jammed or stuck shut, 24 hours a day, usually reaching the city within 10 to 30 minutes, with garage lock repairs from £75 and broken key extraction from £45. We work on up-and-over, side-hinged and roller doors, and we open them without forcing the panel wherever we can.

Once the door is open we find out why it jammed and fix it on the same visit, at a price agreed on the phone before we set off.

Why Is My Garage Door Stuck Shut?

A garage door that will not open is rarely a mystery once we see it. The cause depends on the type of door, and a quick description on the phone usually tells us what to bring.

What you noticeLikely causeWhat we do
Handle turns freely, door stays lockedWorn cam or a snapped latch cable inside the panelRelease the latches without damaging the skin, then repair or replace the cables
Key will not go in or will not turnSeized or rusted cylinder, often on doors that are rarely usedFree and lubricate, or open and fit a new lock
Key snapped in the T-handleOld, worn key or a stiff lockExtract the broken piece and get the lock working
Door unlocks but will not liftBroken spring or cable, or a bent trackAssess safely and refer to a garage door specialist if springs are involved

The second and third rows are the classic locksmith jobs. The fourth is where a locksmith has to be honest about limits, which we explain further down.

Up-and-Over, Side-Hinged and Roller Doors

Up-and-over (canopy and retractable)

The steel single doors found on most Oxford semis and garage blocks. A central T-handle drives two cables or rods to latches at the sides of the frame. When a cable stretches or snaps, the handle turns but nothing happens. These make up the bulk of our garage lockouts.

Side-hinged

Pairs of timber or steel doors opening like French doors, common on older houses and cottages. One leaf is usually bolted top and bottom, and the other carries a rim or mortice lock. Swollen timber and seized bolts are the usual reasons they stick.

Roller and sectional

Mostly electric, found on newer homes and extensions. When one is stuck, the cause is usually the operator rather than a lock. We check whether the manual override can be used safely before anything else.

Integral garages on newer estates, such as those around Barton Park and on the edges of Bicester and Didcot, often have a pedestrian door from the hallway as well. If that internal door is locked too, our lockout service covers it on the same visit.

How a Garage Door Locksmith Opens a Door Without Damage

Garage doors are thin steel or timber panels, so drilling and prising quickly leave dents, bent frames and a door that never sits right again. We avoid that. We work through the lock or the latch mechanism using proper locksmith tools, and drilling is a last resort that we price with you first.

  1. Phone check

You tell us the door type, the handle style and what happens when you try the key. A WhatsApp photo of the handle helps.

  2. Proof it is yours

We ask for ID or proof of address before opening any garage, including lock-up garages rented away from the house.

  3. Non-destructive opening

The door is opened from outside without cutting the panel, in the large majority of cases.

  4. Fix the cause

A snapped cable, worn cam or seized cylinder is repaired or replaced so it does not jam again next week.

Garage Door Springs: Please Leave Them Alone

Do not touch the springs, cones or cables

Garage door springs hold a huge amount of stored energy so the door feels light to lift. A broken or slipping spring can release that energy without warning and cause serious injury. Do not try to adjust, unhook or wind a spring, do not loosen any bolts on the spring brackets, and keep children and pets well away from a door with a broken spring.

If your door has unlocked but drops heavily, lifts on one side only or you heard a loud bang from the garage, a spring has probably gone. Leave the door where it is. Do not prop a half open door with a broom or a wheelie bin and walk under it.

Spring replacement is a job for a garage door engineer with the right winding tools. We will tell you that on the phone rather than charge you for a visit that cannot fix it, and if the door is stuck open we can still help you secure the garage until the engineer comes.

Lost Garage Key or Locked Out of a Lock-Up

Garage keys are the ones nobody copies. The original goes missing during a house move, or the only key was on a bunch that disappeared. Many Oxford streets also have rows of rented lock-up garages behind the houses, where the tenant and the owner both assume the other has a spare.

We open the door, then either fit a replacement lock with new keys or, if the old lock is in good order, cut keys to it where the key type allows. Fitting a new garage lock costs £95 to £135 plus the lock, which is £45 to £95. Our garage door lock replacement page explains the handle and lock options in detail, including extra security such as ground locks.

If a bike is padlocked inside the garage and that key has gone too, we can deal with padlock removal on the same visit with proof of ownership.

Garage Door Locksmith Cover Across Oxford

We are based on Woodstock Road in North Oxford and cover the whole city plus the surrounding towns and villages. City garages in OX1 to OX4 are usually reached in 10 to 30 minutes with no travel charge inside 5 miles. Witney, Abingdon, Kidlington and Bicester are usually 20 to 45 minutes away. Garage work is one part of our home and business locksmith services. Garages hold bikes, tools and often a door into the house, so it is worth reading our home security tips for Oxford residents once the door is open again.
