Honest brand advice

We tell you when a mid range 3-star cylinder is all your door needs.

We fit Ultion locks in Oxford alongside other premium high security cylinders such as Avocet ABS, for £95 to £135 per door plus the cylinder at £50 to £120. These top tier ranges are generally rated both TS007 3-star and Sold Secure SS312 Diamond, and add features such as registered keys. In OX1 to OX4 we usually arrive within 10 to 30 minutes, and most single doors take under half an hour.

This page is about choosing between premium brands. If you just need to know whether your current lock is anti snap, see our general guide to anti snap locks in Oxford.

What a premium cylinder gives you over a basic anti snap lock

Plenty of cylinders now carry a TS007 rating. The difference between an entry level 1-star cylinder, a mid range 3-star and a premium brand lies in how many layers of protection they stack together and what comes with them.

A premium cylinder is not a requirement for every door. For a low risk door already fitted with a sound 3-star cylinder, the upgrade is a choice rather than a fix.

Ultion locks: what makes them different

Ultion is a British brand of euro cylinder, sold mainly through locksmiths, that sits at the top end of the market. Its ranges are marketed as TS007 3-star and Sold Secure Diamond rated. Always check the markings on the cylinder itself, as specifications change between product lines.

  • Attack response. Ultion describes its cylinders as designed so that a forced attack on the outside engages an internal lock, keeping the door secure. We do not go into how attacks work, only that the design aims to keep the door locked even if the front is damaged.
  • Key registration. Keys are supplied with a card, and further copies are ordered against it rather than cut on the high street.
  • Guarantee. Ultion has advertised a guarantee for owners whose cylinder is defeated by a break-in. The amount and conditions have changed over time, so read the current terms on the manufacturer’s website and register your lock if required.

Buy fitted, not just bought

Even the best cylinder is weakened if it sticks out past the handle or the door is out of line. Getting the size and fit right matters as much as the brand.

Avocet ABS and other high security alternatives

Avocet ABS

A long established UK range, generally sold as TS007 3-star and Sold Secure Diamond rated. Designed to resist snapping, bumping, drilling and picking, with key copies controlled on many versions.

Strong alternative, often a little cheaper

Ultion

Top of many people’s list, with its attack response design and a promoted guarantee. Usually one of the dearer options.

For main entrances and high risk doors

Other Diamond rated ranges

Several other makers sell cylinders tested to SS312 Diamond. We can source them if you prefer a particular brand or need a size that is hard to find.

Chosen case by case

Exact features, prices and guarantee terms vary by product line and change over time. Treat the descriptions above as a starting point and confirm details with the manufacturer. When quoting, we name the specific range and size we plan to fit.

Who needs high security locks?

A premium cylinder makes most sense where the door is at higher risk or the stakes of a key being copied are higher:

  • After a break-in or attempted break-in. If a cylinder has already been attacked, many owners want the strongest replacement available. Our break-in make-safe service secures the door first.
  • Ground floor flats. Doors opening onto communal hallways or rear courtyards in converted houses see little passing traffic.
  • Insurers asking for a stated standard. Some policies, especially for high value contents, name Sold Secure Diamond or similar. Check your wording.
  • Landlords with frequent tenant changes. Registered keys stop departing tenants copying keys at a kiosk. Our guide for Oxford landlords and letting agents covers changeover routines.
  • Back doors and side gates out of view. The less visible the door, the more an extra layer earns its keep.

Keyed alike sets and key registration cards

Most premium ranges can be supplied keyed alike, so one key works the front door, back door and side door. Because these are made to order rather than taken off the shelf, tell us how many doors and which sizes when you book so a matched set can be ordered.

  1. Keep the card safe. The registration card is your proof of ownership for ordering keys. Store it away from the keys themselves.
  2. Order copies through a locksmith or the maker. High street kiosks cannot cut registered profiles. Send a photo of the card on WhatsApp to 07466 695655 and we will quote.
  3. Moving house? Pass the card to the new owner, or they may prefer the cylinders changed or rekeyed.

If you manage a building where different people need different levels of access, a registered key profile can be the base of a master key system instead.

Having Ultion locks fitted in Oxford

Each premium cylinder is measured on the door before ordering or fitting. On uPVC doors the sizes are usually close to standard, but on thicker slabs the offsets are longer, as explained on our composite door lock page. We check the multipoint strip engages cleanly at the same time, because a premium cylinder on a door that will not lock properly is money wasted.

You receive an itemised invoice naming the brand, range, rating and the door each cylinder was fitted to. That record is useful for insurers and for registering any manufacturer guarantee.

Ultion Locks Oxford High Security Cylinders Questions

Fitting costs £95 to £135 per door including VAT, plus the cylinder at £50 to £120 depending on size and range. We name the exact cylinder when quoting, and keyed alike sets for several doors are priced together.
For a main entrance, a ground floor flat or a home that has been targeted before, many owners feel the extra protection and registered keys are worth it. For a low risk door with a sound 3-star cylinder, a premium brand is optional.
Both are UK premium euro cylinders generally rated TS007 3-star and Sold Secure Diamond. They differ in internal design, key control and guarantee terms, and Avocet ABS is often slightly cheaper. Check current specifications with each manufacturer.
Usually not. Ultion keys are registered, and copies are normally ordered through a locksmith or the manufacturer using your key card. Keep the card somewhere safe and separate from your keys.
Ultion has promoted a guarantee for cylinders defeated in a break-in, but the amount and conditions have changed over time and registration may be required. Read the current terms on the manufacturer’s website before relying on it.
They are different tests. TS007 3-star is the British kitemark level, while SS312 Diamond is Sold Secure’s top cylinder grade. Premium cylinders usually hold both, which is why insurers and police advice often mention them.
