Van key replacement in Oxford is done at your van by our mobile auto locksmith, 24 hours a day, with spare keys from £90, remote keys from £120 and lost keys from £170. We cut the blade, code the chip to the immobiliser and pair the buttons on site, usually the same day you call.

We work on the vans trades actually drive: Ford Transit and Transit Custom, Vauxhall Vivaro, VW Transporter, Mercedes Sprinter and the Peugeot, Citroen and Toyota panel vans. Our full range of car and van work sits under car key replacement in Oxford.

Which vans do we make keys for?

Most of the van keys we cut around Oxfordshire are for a fairly short list of models. Key types change with the generation, so the year on your V5C tells us more than the badge.

VanTypical key by eraNotes
Ford Transit, Transit Custom, Transit ConnectFixed blade remote on older vans, flip key on most from the mid 2010s, keyless on some higher trimsVery common, usually quick to code
Vauxhall Vivaro and MovanoEarlier Vivaros share parts with the Renault Trafic; from 2019 the Vivaro is built on the same base as the Peugeot ExpertWe check which platform yours is before quoting
VW Transporter and CrafterFlip remote on T5 and T6 era vansSame key family as many VW cars
Mercedes Sprinter and VitoRemote key, keyless on some newer vansPriced in our Mercedes band, from £220
Peugeot Partner and Expert, Citroen Berlingo and Dispatch, Toyota ProaceFlip or fixed blade remoteRecent versions share much of their electronics
Renault Trafic and MasterRemote key on most, depending on yearChecked by registration

Brand detail is on our Ford key replacement and Vauxhall key replacement pages. A few of the newest vans, or some all keys lost jobs on them, still need a main dealer. We check by registration before we set off, so you never pay for a wasted trip.

The van has only ever had one key

Many vans are bought second hand with a single key, and nobody gets round to ordering another. It works fine until the morning it goes missing on a job or falls through a drain cover on site. At that point the van is not just transport, it is your toolbox and your income for the day.

Copying a working key costs from £90 and takes far less time than making one from nothing, which starts from £170. That price gap is the strongest reason to get a second key while you still have the first. Our spare key copying service works the same way on vans as on cars.

Running a small fleet?

Tell us how many vans and drivers you have. We can code a key per driver in one visit and list each van by registration on an itemised invoice, which keeps your bookkeeping and any insurance claims simple.

Lost van keys: what happens from the phone call

  1. Call with the registration. We confirm the key type, whether we can make it on site and a fixed price before travelling.
  2. Proof of ownership. V5C and photo ID, or a lease or hire agreement for company and contract hire vans. For a business van we check you are authorised to have keys made.
  3. Cut the blade. The key is cut to the van’s code with our mobile cutting machine.
  4. Code the chip. We connect to the diagnostic port and add the new key to the immobiliser. On most models the lost key can be removed from the van’s memory at the same time.
  5. Test every door. Cab, side loading door and rear doors are checked with both the buttons and the blade.

If the van is locked with the key inside rather than lost, it is usually an entry job instead, covered on our keys locked in a vehicle page. Daytime openings start from £85.

Van door locks that stick, jam or have been damaged

Vans work harder than cars. The side loading door is opened dozens of times a day, rear doors get knocked by ladders and pallets, and lock barrels sit exposed to road spray all winter. We see three faults again and again.

Stiff or seized barrel

The blade goes in but will not turn, usually from dirt and corrosion. Cleaning and lubricating often brings it back without new parts.

Worn key, worn barrel

An old blade that has to be jiggled. A fresh key cut to code often turns smoothly again, at £35 to £55 for a key with no chip.

Damaged after an attempted break in

Forced barrels and bent handles. We make the van lockable again and give you an itemised invoice for the insurer.

If the ignition barrel itself is worn or broken, ignition repair is £155 to £245 plus parts. Our mobile auto locksmith page explains that side of the work.

Protecting tools in your van

Tool theft from vans is a well known problem for trades across Oxfordshire, and thieves often target the door locks rather than the windows. Factory locks on some panel vans are not designed to resist determined force, which is why so many tradespeople add extra security.

The common add ons are slam locks, which lock the door automatically as it shuts, and hook or dead locks fitted separately to the factory lock. Whether we can supply or fit one depends on the van model and the product, so ask us when you call and we will tell you honestly what we can do and what is better left to a van security specialist.

  • Take tools out overnight where you can, and park with the rear doors against a wall.
  • Mark tools and keep a list of serial numbers for insurers.
  • Do not leave a spare van key in the cab or under a wheel arch.
  • If a key has been stolen with the tools, have it removed from the immobiliser so it can no longer start the van.

Main dealer or mobile locksmith for a van key?

Main dealer

Orders a key to your VIN and codes it at the workshop. The van usually has to be brought in, which can mean recovery if no key works. Sometimes the only route for the newest models.

Best when the model is very new or dealer only.

Mobile van locksmith

Comes to the van, cuts and codes on site and can usually do it the same day. Prices agreed on the phone include VAT and labour.

Best when the van needs to be working again today.

Either way, ask for the price including coding and travel before agreeing. Ours comes from the published locksmith price list, and travel is free within 5 miles of central Oxford.

Van remote not working but the key still starts it?

If the van starts with the key but the buttons have stopped locking the doors, the fob battery is the first suspect, followed by a remote that has lost its pairing. We can test both on site. A remote that has dropped out can be paired again with key programming from £55 to £95 when you already have a working cut key.

Cracked cases, worn buttons and broken flip blades are common on van keys that live in a work trouser pocket. Our car key repair page covers what can be fixed and when a new key makes more sense.

Van Key Replacement Oxford Transit Sprinter Questions

A spare copied from your working key starts from £90, a remote or flip key from £120 and a keyless key from £160. If every key is lost, prices start from £170, and Mercedes vans start from £220. We confirm the exact figure from your registration.
Usually yes, at the van and the same day, from £170 including cutting and coding. Have the V5C and photo ID ready. On most Transit Custom vans the missing key can also be removed from the immobiliser so it no longer starts the engine.
Yes for most Sprinter and Vito models, priced in our Mercedes band from £220. Some of the newest Mercedes vans still need a main dealer, so send us the registration and we check before travelling.
Yes. Tell us each registration and how many keys per van. We need proof that you are authorised to have keys made, such as a fleet or lease agreement, and we list every van separately on the itemised invoice.
Try the key in the cab door. If it turns there, the side door barrel is likely seized or worn and can often be cleaned and freed. If it struggles everywhere, a worn blade is more likely and a new key cut to code may solve it.
Yes. Daytime van openings start from £85 and nights, weekends and bank holidays from £130. If a child or animal is shut inside the van, call 999 first.
