Registration check first

We confirm your key type and what is possible before anyone sets off.

Mini key replacement in Oxford is done at your car: we cut and code spare or lost keys for the Mini Hatch, Clubman, Convertible and Countryman, test every function and hand you an itemised invoice, usually the same day and often within 10 to 30 minutes in the city. Mini keys are priced by model and year, and we confirm the figure on the phone before setting off.

Minis run BMW Group electronics, so the key you need depends on the generation rather than the badge. Send us the registration and we tell you which key fits and whether it is a job for us or the dealer. Other makes are on our car key replacement Oxford page.

A Mini key service in the city where Minis are made

Plant Oxford in Cowley has built the modern Mini since 2001, so it is no surprise that Oxford has a lot of them: first cars for students, runabouts in Summertown and Headington, and plenty of Cooper S and JCW models on the ring road. When one of those keys goes missing, you do not need to wait for a dealer slot.

We come to wherever the car is parked, whether that is a terraced street in Cowley and east Oxford, a college car park or a driveway in a village outside the city. The key is cut from your car’s code, programmed to it and tested before we leave.

Because Mini shares its electronic architecture with BMW, the methods overlap with our BMW key replacement work. The key shapes and common faults are different, though, and that is what the rest of this page covers.

Mini key replacement by generation: R50 to F56 and newer

Minis are usually described by chassis code. Your V5C will not show it, but the year and body style narrow it down quickly.

GenerationRoughlyKey you will have
R50, R52, R53 (Hatch, Convertible, Cooper S)2001 to 2006A metal blade key with lock buttons in the head, turned in a normal ignition
R56 Hatch, R55 Clubman, R57 Convertible, R60 Countryman and related models2006 to around 2014 (Countryman later)A round fob pushed into a slot by the steering wheel, then a Start button; small emergency blade hidden inside
F56 three door, F55 five door, F57 Convertible, F54 Clubman, F60 Countryman2014 to around 2024A pocket fob; you start with the toggle switch in the centre console. Comfort Access on many cars
Latest Cooper, Aceman and Countryman generationFrom around 2024Newest fobs and phone based keys; call us first, as some may be dealer only for now

Facelifts moved some changeover dates, and the electric Mini shares parts with the F56 in some years and not in others. A quick look at the registration settles it.

How the Mini immobiliser decides whether to start

Every Mini key has a chip with a coded identity. When you press Start, a control module in the car checks that identity against its list of approved keys. If it matches, the engine is allowed to run. If not, nothing happens, even with a perfectly cut blade.

Early R50 and R53 cars use an older BMW style system often called EWS. The R56 family uses a later module usually called CAS, which also stores mileage and key data, and the F series cars moved to newer body control modules. Each needs different equipment and, on some cars, the module is read on the bench rather than through the diagnostic port.

The practical point for you: adding a key while one still works is simpler on every generation, and we can also delete a lost key so it no longer starts the car. Our car key programming service covers coding a key you already hold.

Mini key not working? The faults we see most

What happensLikely causeUsual fix
R56 round key goes in the slot but the car will not startWorn slot reader, damaged key chip, or the key has lost its codingTest a second key; recode the key or repair the slot
Buttons dead on an R56 key kept in a drawerOn many of these keys the battery charges while sitting in the slot, so a spare that is never used goes flatUse it in the car for a long drive, or replace the battery or key
F56 or Countryman shows key not detectedWeak coin cell in the fobNew battery; meanwhile hold the fob at the marked backup spot shown in your handbook
Comfort Access stopped opening the doorsFob battery, or a door handle sensor faultBattery first, then we test the handles
Cracked case or snapped key ring loopWear on older fobsNew shell, keeping the original electronics where possible

Many of these are quick fixes rather than new keys. See our car key repair page for case swaps and button repairs.

Spare Mini key or every key lost?

A Mini spare key made from a working one is the quickest job. We read the car with your key present, cut the new blade, code the new fob and check locking, start and the boot. If you only have one key for a Mini, this is worth doing before that key goes missing. Our spare car keys service explains the process for any make.

All Mini keys lost

On most R50, R56 and many F series Minis we can still make a key at the car, sometimes by removing and reading the module. On some later F series and the newest generation, losing every key may need Mini’s own systems. We check your registration before travelling, so you never pay us to find that out.

If the key is in the car and the doors are locked, that is a different job. Our keys locked in car service opens the car without damage first. A child, vulnerable adult or pet inside in warm weather is a 999 call before anything else.

Mini dealer or mobile auto locksmith?

Mini dealer

Full factory access for every model and year. Keys are ordered against the vehicle number, which can take days, and the car usually has to be at the dealership.

Best for the newest Minis and dealer only keys.

Mobile auto locksmith

We come to the car, cut and code on the spot, and agree the price before setting off. Supported models are often finished in one visit.

Best for most R and F series spares and lost keys.

Neither is the right answer for every Mini, which is why we check first and tell you plainly if the dealer is the better route.

Mini Key Replacement Oxford Questions

It depends on the generation, the key type and whether you still have a working key. Send the registration and we confirm a fixed price on the phone before we travel, including cutting, coding and testing at the car.
On most R50, R56 and many F series Minis, yes, at the car. Some later models with every key lost may need the Mini dealer. We check by registration first and tell you which applies.
On R56 era cars it is usually the key’s coding, a damaged chip or a worn slot reader. Trying a second key tells us which. A flat key battery affects the buttons rather than starting on these models.
Sometimes, if it is a new key of the correct type. Used fobs are often locked to their first car and cannot be reused. Check with us before buying; our key programming page explains more.
The electronics are closely related, as Mini is part of the BMW Group, but the key shapes and parts differ. A Mini key will not work in a BMW, and each is coded to one car only.
We come to you anywhere in Oxford and Oxfordshire, so there is no need to take the car anywhere. Most spare Mini keys are made in a single visit once we have seen the V5C and your ID.
