A digital door lock is worth it if you want to stop carrying keys, give temporary codes to guests, cleaners or tenants, or see who came and went, and your door and existing lock are in good condition. We fit and repair keypad, fingerprint and app controlled smart locks across Oxford and Oxfordshire from our base in North Oxford, with fitting at £145 to £195 plus the keypad unit at £80 to £250. They are less suitable if your insurer insists on a specific British Standard lock, or the door already struggles to lock.

Types of Digital Door Lock Compared

Digital lock is a loose term. In practice there are four main types, and they behave very differently on a real front door.

TypeHow you get inBest forWatch out for
Standalone keypad lockPIN code on an outdoor keypadSide doors, offices, holiday lets, garagesCodes shared too widely; worn buttons can hint at the code
Fingerprint lockFingerprint reader, usually with PIN backupFamilies who want no codes to rememberReader performance in cold, wet weather or with dry skin
App or Bluetooth smart lockPhone app, sometimes a fob or voice assistantRemote access, guest codes, activity logsPhone battery, app support over years, Wi Fi bridge needed for remote use
Retrofit smart cylinder or thumbturn unitA motor turns your existing cylinder from insideRenters and anyone who wants to keep the outside lookFit depends on the cylinder; the outside lock is only as strong as that cylinder

Retrofit products such as the Nuki range and the Yale Conexis L2 are popular in the UK. Exact compatibility and features change between models, so check the current specification for your door before buying, or send us a photo and we will tell you what fits.

Will a Smart Door Lock Work on My uPVC or Timber Door?

uPVC and composite doors

Most have a multipoint lock driven by a euro cylinder. A smart unit can usually replace or turn that cylinder. The catch is that on many doors you still need to lift the handle to throw the hooks before the cylinder can lock, so automatic locking only works on doors with an automatic or self locking multipoint, or if you lift the handle yourself.

Usually workable. Check the door lifts easily first.

Timber doors

Period and timber doors often use a nightlatch plus a mortice lock. Keypad nightlatches and smart rim locks exist, but the mortice deadlock usually stays as a key lock for night time and insurance.

Workable as a day lock, keep the deadlock.

Doors with a fault

A dropped uPVC door or a sticking latch will make a motorised lock strain, drain batteries and jam. This is the most common reason smart locks fail.

Fix the door before fitting anything.

Before any install we check that the existing multipoint mechanism or deadlock runs freely and that the door closes without a shove. If the euro cylinder is being replaced as part of the job, choose one rated TS007 3 star or Sold Secure SS312 Diamond, as explained on our anti snap lock page.

What Happens When the Batteries Die?

This is the question we are asked most, and a good install answers it before it happens.

  • Warnings first. Most units warn you for days or weeks before the batteries run flat, through a beep, a light or an app alert.
  • Emergency power. Many keypads have contacts for a 9V battery or a USB socket on the outside so you can power them long enough to enter a code.
  • Mechanical override. Most smart locks keep a normal key cylinder or a key override. Keep that key somewhere you can reach from outside, such as with a trusted neighbour.
  • Cold weather. Battery life often drops in winter on exposed doors, so change them on a schedule, not when they die.

Our rule on every install

You must always have a way in that does not depend on electricity or a phone. If a product has no mechanical backup, we will tell you before you buy it.

If a lock does fail, our keypad lock repair service handles faulty keypads and smart locks for £75 to £145, and if you are shut out in the meantime our lockout service can get you in, non destructive methods first.

Digital Locks, Insurance and Security Standards

Many home insurance policies ask for a BS3621 lock or a key locking multipoint on final exit doors. Relatively few keypad or app locks are tested to BS3621, so fitting one as your only lock could fall short of the policy wording. Read your policy or ask your insurer before you change anything.

The common and sensible answer is to use the digital lock for day to day access and keep an insurance compliant deadlock for when the house is empty or at night. On uPVC doors, a smart unit working with a rated cylinder and a properly locked multipoint can keep the same physical security you had before.

Also think about fire safety. Inside, the door should open quickly without hunting for a key or a phone, which is why most units use a thumbturn or handle on the inside. For more on picking locks by standard, see our home security hardware checklist.

Keyless Door Locks for Landlords, Airbnb Hosts and Holiday Lets

Short let hosts in Oxford and the Cotswolds edge of the county are among our most frequent digital lock customers, because a key handover at 11pm after a delayed train is nobody’s idea of fun.

  1. Unique code per stay. Set a code that starts at check in and expires at check out.
  2. Separate cleaner code that works only during cleaning hours.
  3. Activity log to confirm arrival times without phoning guests.
  4. Keep a mechanical backup with a local keyholder for when a guest flattens the batteries.

Long term landlords should be careful. Tenants are entitled to quiet enjoyment, so remote access logs and landlord codes need to be agreed in the tenancy, and you should not enter without proper notice. Our guide for Oxford landlords and letting agents covers lock changes between tenancies, and offices and shared buildings are covered by our commercial locksmith service.

Is a Digital Door Lock Worth It for Your Home?

Answer these four questions honestly and the decision usually makes itself.

  • Do keys cause you regular problems? Teenagers losing keys, carers or cleaners needing access, or guests arriving late all point towards yes.
  • Is the door in good order? If the handle is stiff or the door drags on the frame, spend the money on a repair first.
  • Will you keep up with batteries and codes? A smart lock needs light but regular attention, a bit like a smoke alarm.
  • Does your insurer accept it? If the policy names BS3621, plan to keep a compliant deadlock alongside.

Three or four yes answers and a digital lock is likely to earn its cost. One or two, and a rated cylinder with a few spare keys may serve you better for less.

Smart Lock Installation Cost and What Happens on the Day

Keypad lock fitting costs £145 to £195 plus the keypad unit at £80 to £250, depending on the door and the product. If you have bought your own unit, we can fit it once we have checked it suits your door. Prices include VAT and labour and are agreed before we start.

  1. Photo check

Send a photo of both sides of the door and the lock edge on WhatsApp. We confirm what will fit.

  2. Door check

On the day, we test the existing lock and adjust the door if it drags.

  3. Fit and set up

We fit the unit, set the master code or app, and show you how to add and delete users.

  4. Backup test

We test the key override and emergency power with you before we leave.

If you decide a digital lock is not for you, a standard lock change with a 3 star cylinder costs less and still raises security. More buying guides are in our locksmith advice guides.

Digital Door Locks in Oxfordshire Are They Questions

A well made digital lock on a sound door is as secure as the mechanism behind it. The weak points are usually an unrated cylinder, a dropped door or a code that has been shared widely. Pair it with a TS007 3 star cylinder and change codes regularly.
Usually yes. Most uPVC doors use a euro cylinder that a smart unit can replace or turn. On many doors you still need to lift the handle to engage the multipoint lock before it can lock. We check your door by photo first.
Most units warn you well in advance. Many have contacts for a 9V battery or a USB socket outside, and most keep a key override. If none of that works, our keypad lock team can open and repair it for £75 to £145.
It can. Many policies require a BS3621 lock or key locking multipoint on final exit doors, and few digital locks are tested to BS3621. Most people keep a compliant deadlock for nights and when away. Check with your insurer before relying on the digital lock alone.
Fitting is £145 to £195 plus the unit at £80 to £250, agreed before we start and including VAT and labour. Travel is free within 5 miles of central Oxford and £10 up to 15 miles. See our full price list.
A fingerprint lock means no code to share or forget, which suits families. A keypad is easier for short term guests and cleaners because you can issue and cancel codes. Many models combine both, which is often the best choice.
